Hi! I'm Victoria (Torie). I am a biracial Black transracial adoptee who was adopted into a white family in the bluegrass state of Kentucky. My parents strove to make our home a space that constantly validated and celebrated my heritage, but I often struggled with feeling alone and isolated. While I always knew my white adoptive parents loved me, they were ill-equipped to help me develop a positive racial identity, navigate racism, and connect with Black community.
After college, I began to explore the unaddressed impacts of my adoption story, reclaim my racial identity, and seek out my biological family. In 2018, I began to share that journey publicly through my Instagram micro-blog Wreckage and Wonder. Through my online presence, I connected with transracial adoptees and found a community that understood my complex identity. In 2019 I turned my blog into a small business, Wreckage and Wonder, LLC, and began providing educational workshops and consultations as well as speaking at conferences and agencies about transracial adoption, racial identity development, and anti-racism.
Wreckage and Wonder, LLC has three big goals to meet in three years. Goal number one is the creation of a transracial adoption course that is adoptee-focused, trauma-informed, anti-racist and research driven. The full educational experience will include a six-week comprehensive hybrid transracial adoption course with video lessons, live weekly workshops and a physical workbook that particpants keep and complete throughout the course. This course will be led by transracial adoptees and former foster youth experts and will feature Q&A with adoption professionals, birth mothers and current white adoptive and foster parents. This course will provide prospective white adoptive and foster parents with crucial preparatory education on race, ethnicity, culture, transracial adoption history, transracial parenting, racial identity development, and anti-racism. This course will cultivate proactive, empathetic, and courageous parenting skills that empower parents to advocate for, protect, and celebrate their child of color!
You can learn more about how Wreckage and Wonder, LLC is expanding and what's in store for this next year as a growing business on the newly renovated website www.wreckageandwonder.com. Your contribution goes directly to the creation and implementation of this course from workbook printing and compensation for course contributors to tech and video professionals who will film and edit the course. By investing in this course you are directly impacting how the next generation of white adoptive and foster parents raise and support their children. You are also supporting a Black transracial adoptee-owned business that donates 10% of every purchase to family preservation and reunification effdorts. Future transracial adoptees and foster youth deserve to be welcomed into anti-racist, trauma-informed and safe families that commit to life-long learning. They deserve to thrive. I hope you'll join me!
