Hello,
My name is Kelsey! I recently moved to Tucson, Arizona with my partner Quest in July 2020. Upon arrival, we bought a house. It’s an adorable adobe house in southern Tucson. We came from Atlanta and didn’t know much about the house when we bought it. Yet, we have since found out that it was once a community garden and food bank for a nonprofit called Tierra Y Libertad (Land & Liberty). The house has a green house, irrigation system, and rainwater collector in the backyard. Yet, the backyard needs some work. The green house is falling apart, and there’s a lot that needs to be revitalized. Plus, in order to grow anything in the desert, I'm gonna need tons of topsoil. A hydroponic system would be beautiful as well. My partner and I would love to bring the garden back to life and have a thriving community garden/food bank once again! We just need some help. We are calling the garden the TRANSplants Desert Garden because we are a trans/non-binary identifying couple that are also transplants from Atlanta. I, Kelsey, am a biology teacher and previous environmental educator. My partner, Quest, is in the process of becoming an ordained minister in the United Methodist Church, and we both believe in hands-on ministry that provides practical resources for the community. We hope to have a project that members of the community can be involved in and provide locally grown organic foods that fill the gap between what people in our community can afford and what is necessary for a healthy diet.
