ECOFEM is turning waste into value using one of Earth's oldest decomposers, Black Soldier Fly Larvae - all while empowering women. Black Soldier Fly Larvae (BSFL), to manage and reduce organic waste while actively reducing carbon emissions from waste by 70%. The BSFL break down waste, creating two byproducts: BSFL animal feed and fertilizer (frass). Using vocational training and micro-certifications, ECOFEM trains rural female farmers to harvest and implement these two products within their farms. Frass enriches the soil, water retention, and crop yields, while the larvae eliminate the need to grow or import water-intensive feed crops. Our closed-loop system reinvents waste management through sustainable agriculture, all while empowering 43% of developing nation’s agriculture laborers, women, who have historically faced the most barriers to new markets and technologies. As an organization founded entirely by women, we believe in putting women first at all levels of our organization. If we want to make progress, it is not enough that we tackle unsustainable farming practices - we must also redress systemic inequalities at the same time. We put people first in a transformational vision of a better world.
Your donation will help ECOFEM launch our first pilot program in Mkuru, a deprived area of Nairobi - where we will help train 14 women farmers at a community farm in BSFL farming utilizing local organic waste. From there, we hope to expand to a series of selected pilot program locations. These pilot programs, located at women-led farms in developing nations, will train women in BSFL farming and provide them with micro certifications in BSFL farming.
