Trans Zakat Project 2024 (1445 AH)
Donation protected
Launched in 2021, the Trans Zakat Project aims to be a bridge between zakat-eligible trans/non-binary Muslims and donors interested in supporting them.
----------------------------
Why Zakat?
Each year, some Muslims have the obligation to pay zakat (charity), while others are eligible to receive zakat. Since there is a special form of zakat due during Ramadan, many Muslims choose to pay their annual zakat at the same time. That is why the Trans Zakat Project centers on Ramadan—but we accept any donations, all year, not just those for zakat!
Many organizations collect and distribute zakat funds for Muslims, but often these funds do not reach trans Muslims—even when they are experiencing significant hardship. The reasons why this happens range from unintentional oversight to systemic transphobia. Additionally, trans and non-binary Muslims may not reach out to Muslim organizations for assistance when they need it, because they have had past experiences of stigma and exclusion in Muslim settings.
We know many Muslims do want to be able to support their fellow Muslims who are trans and non-binary. The Trans Zakat Project aims to be a bridge between those who wish to give support and those trans and non-binary Muslims who are eligible and wish to receive it.
Who can donate?
Anyone! We have created this specifically for Muslims to make zakat donations—both annual zakat al-mal donations and Ramadan-specific zakat al-fitr donations—but those are not the only donations we accept. Muslims can use the Trans Zakat Project to donate fidyah (a donation to compensate for days of fasting that were missed). Additionally, anyone (Muslim or non-Muslim) can make a donation for the simple purpose of supporting trans and non-binary Muslims.
For donations to qualify for Ramadan/Eid, they must be received by the end of Eid al-Fitr (the first day of the month of Shawwal), which is expected to fall on April 21, 2023.
For donations to qualify as Zakat for the 1444 AH (Muslim calendar) year, they must be received on or before Dhul-Hijjah 30, 1444, which is expected to fall on July 18, 2023.
A note about privacy: Donors may choose to share or hide their names publicly on the GoFundMe platform. Whichever you choose, the Trans Zakat Project will not share donor information with recipients.
When are funds disbursed?
Currently, we are expecting to disburse funds once after Eid al-Fitr and a second time to disburse any funds that are donated between Eid al-Fitr and the end of the Muslim calendar year. If additional funds are received before December 31, a third disbursement may occur. Any funds donated between January 1, 2025 will be disbursed after Eid al-Fitr next year.
