Supporting Transgender Youth

TransFamily Support Services (TFSS) is compassionately dedicated to saving the lives of San Diego County Transgender and Gender Non-Binary (GNB) youth by empowering them with education, support, resources, and advocacy throughout their transition. We were founded in 2015, in the aftermath of four Trans teen suicides here in San Diego.
Unfortunately, this tragic outcome is not an outlier: Data show that 51% of Trans youth attempt suicide. TFSS is committed to changing the status quo and reducing the incidence of mental health disorders, bullying, discrimination, violence, and homelessness in this vulnerable population.
Over our six-year history, TFSS has evolved to keep pace with the needs of our youth and families. Today, we offer family support services (which contribute to a dramatic decrease in suicide attempts); training; education; mentoring; and community outreach. TFSS is the only local organization that is exclusively dedicated to the needs of Trans and GNB youth. We are available 24/7, and there is never a charge for our services.
TFSS currently employees three Youth Program Coordinators (YPC) who are responsible for recruiting, screening, training, and providing support for TFSS’ volunteer youth group facilitators and mentors for Transgender mentees. Often, the YPCs serve as counselors and mentors themselves.
These are critical connections for youth who are navigating the transgender continuum, no matter the stage – from early questioning to adulthood success. The interaction with peers having lived experience helps make the journey less frightening and isolating, as youth realize they are not alone.
YPCs also represent TFSS at community events, an important way that we build awareness and understanding of Trans and GNB youth. In addition, they participate in school GSA (Gender Sexuality Alliance) clubs and monitor Discord, a social media platform favored by our population.
