As we enter the second year of the Trump administration, this project - Tracking this authoritarian moment, and the resistance to it – needs your support. We’ve already charted year one of the Trump regime’s authoritarianism, and of the resistance. With your support, we’ll chart the remaining years, as well. Help us show how all the pieces of this authoritarian moment fit together… and help us show that there are roles in the Resistance for everyone, from every profession, and from every walk of life.

This project is based on the understanding that authoritarianism is undermined through mass movements, combined with dissent from within the pillars of support regimes depend on. Successful social movements cultivate dissent from within those pillars, which include many institutions and sectors of society.

What dissent from within these pillars looks like may not be obvious. It can also be intimidating for people to engage in dissent from within the pillars they participate in, which often includes their livelihoods. Examples are needed, both to understand opportunities for dissent… and because examples offer courage and inspiration. The more examples people see, the easier it becomes to participate in dissent themselves.

This project, launched by Cross Cultural Solidarity, aims to offer those examples and increase the visibility of many forms of dissent by charting the many types of dissent already taking place. The project also offers resources to support dissent within various pillars and sectors of society. Funding will also allow for an extensive outreach campaign to hundreds of progressive organizations, to make sure these resources are widely used. The goal is to strengthen and expand the anti-authoritarian, pro-democracy movement that our democracy depends on.

A second component of this project tracks the authoritarianism & bigotry of the second Trump administration, and the broader far-right ecosystem this administration is a part of. By charting the many dimensions of this authoritarian moment, this project helps us see how all the pieces fit together, and how each piece plays out over time. When this moment is over, this project will remain as an important source for the historical record. And it will be an important source, demonstrating how nonviolent resistance is an essential tool for systemic change.
