At the TORO program (Tenant Overdose Response Organizers) we work within private Single Room Occupancy buildings that are home to thousands of residents on the Downtown Eastside (DTES) These buildings have been the site of multiple overdose deaths which have dramatically increased since the beginning of the pandemic.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, we have employed 47 TOROS who live in private sros in the DTES - with their help we have been working to keep these buildings stocked with harm reduction such as Narcan, hand sanitizer masks gloves, food, hygiene products, and cleaning supplies in order to combat the spread of COVID. Our focus at TORO has always been to prevent overdose deaths within private sros by training tenants in overdose response.
Since the pandemic began tenants have been picking up and bringing supplies to their buildings - to keep transmission rates lower in the community.
Your donation of funds will help us to buy:
Wagons.
We need about 50 fold up wagons ($137.99 at Canadian Tire) that tenants can use to safely transport harm reduction, food, and covid prevention supplies to their private SROS. With winter coming it is imperative these supplies are accessible and able to be distributed, we wouldn't be able to do this without the lead tenants handing out these supplies with wagons.
Solstice gifts for the TOROs.
We would like to buy special treats for the TOROs or feel free to donate treats directly instead - we are looking for warm clothing items such as new winter coats, socks, gloves, etc. We would also put your donation towards stipends & gift cards for TOROS to say thank you for all their hard work this year.
Heat for our training space.
The need to break isolation is more important than ever. We are working to bring tenants in very small groups together for training again with good COVID-19 protocols in place. But our space is very cold! If you can make a donation towards the temporary space heaters or the larger job we need to pay for it to get a heating system installed, that would be wonderful. Please consider donating to keep us warm as we bring people together.
