As I have spoken with many people on the islands it has become clear that while they have short-term necessities they do not have sustainable long-term solutions. Many of their homes have been carried off in the storm and/or are now unlivable, their crops and livestock are missing or dead, all their belongings are missing, and the stores are out of supplies. Many people will be forced to live in disaster centers on the island (mostly, the local village LDS church buildings).
I lived in Tonga for 2 years and have been planning to go back this May. I have been in contact with LDS church leaders in Tonga and will use all the money donated to this GoFundMe to give directly back to the Tongan people. These church leaders are working together to inform me of supplies that are needed the most.
I have eaten, laughed, and cried with many of these people and have been to many of the buildings and homes in the pictures and know they will need our help at this time.
Please donate any amount you are able to offer up to the people of Tonga—no offering is too small. The cyclone has, unfortunately, demolished most of their lines for communication with external affairs. Like I said, the money raised with this GoFundMe will go DIRECTLY to buying supplies to ship off to the people of Tonga. Pictures will be uploaded to document the efforts we plan to take to help these people. If you are unable to donate funds, but you would like to help in other ways (Blankets, Socks, Clothes, Books, etc.) please contact me directly through GoFundMe.
