Hi everyone . The snowies are back already and it looks like a bunch of the juveniles from last year are returning to grace our shores again. It should be another challenging and exciting season.
Last winter, through your amazing generosity and cooperation, we were able to work around the clock to cover thousands of miles to work with a record number of snowy owls. Over 100 owls were captured, thoroughly checked, banded, photographed and released. ( number 100 is pictured above...courtesy of Aaron Winters )
Over the last 30 years, I've spent over $45,000 of my own money on snowy owl research and the last thing I really want to do is ask for donations but since snowy owls have been officially listed as a 'Vulnerable' species, it's more important than ever to continue searching for answers and keeping tabs on our beloved white owls. No funds are wasted and every last cent is spent on snowy owl research.
The fragile arctic ecosystem, where they call home, is changing dramatically and many plants, animals and birds may not be able to adapt quickly enough to meet those challenges.
As a top tier arctic and maritime predator, snowy owls are an invaluable environmental barometer of the health of these ecosystems and more. We've learned so much, but the more we learn about snowy owls, the more we come to realize.... just how Little we really know.
Please help with project Snowywatch and my continuing research into the mysteries of the lives and trials of these iconic and charismatic owls of the far north. Your donation, large or small, will go a long way toward helping to defray the cost of road expenses, biological supplies, and equipment maintenance.
Thanks, and have a great Holiday season!
