THE TOM & ETTA CRAWFOD EMERGENCY FUND
When you're the parent of a child with Autism, every aspect of parenting is magnified. Playdates become complex projects requiring diplomacy, support, and vast quantities of time and patience. Trips to the doctor are frequent, expensive, difficult, and fraught with worry. Ordinary shopping excursions are strewn with potential disasters and pitfalls. With so much more to think about, worry about, plan for, and manage, special needs parents really do have... special needs.
I know this struggle personally from raising a child on the Autism Spectrum. My son AJ, now 15, has been life's biggest challenge and greatest blessing. It takes a village to raise special needs children.
After learning Etta was diagnosed with Autism I reached out to Tom and Stacy to offer some guidance on how to advocate and navigate through special needs services.
Recently, I learned that Tom and Stacy are going through a divorce. This is common as nearly 90% of parents with special needs children tend to divorce after pouring all of their time, energy and resources into helping the child.
Tom is having a tough time and would never be the guy to ask for help. His parents live in NY, his true friends are scattered around the United States, and he has no support system in his area.
I am organizing a fund to help Tom with basic needs while he transitions from stay at home caregiver to working single dad with joint custody.
Tom is extremely greatful to those who have reached out to help with his job search and to those who have sent messages of support.
