Toiletry kits for released immigrant detainees
Donation protected
The Seattle Immigrant Rights Action Group (SIRAG) supports immigrant detainees when they are released from the Northwest Detention Center (NWDC) in Tacoma. Our group has been provisioning and assembling toiletry kits to give to folks so they have what they need as they spend up to 18 hours traveling to their relatives all across the U.S. The kits go to AID-NW, which provides direct support on-site at the detention center, where people are released to the streets of Tacoma with very few resources.
We have done this work before, so we know AID-NW’s specifications for the kits. We will use your donations to buy supplies in bulk and at a discount (such as toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, soap, shampoo, combs, and shaving razors). We assemble the kits, so AID-NW doesn’t have to process these supplies further.
Our goal is to create about 450 toiletry kits (consumption varies, but this should be about 4-6 months of kits). We will use any remaining funds to buy backpacks for detainees (which are also needed). We’ll contact all donors to invite them to the assembly parties when we get to that point. There is no obligation to participate, but if you’re in Seattle and want to help, we would love to meet you!
