Toiletries Amnesty supports over 350 charities and organisations in the UK including food banks, homeless shelters and hostels, mental health services, NHS trusts, women and children's refuges, and other organisations working to alleviate hygiene poverty.
So, what is hygiene poverty? This is where someone on a low income, insecure employment or accommodation or with little access to money is unable to afford basic hygiene products, such as soap, toothpaste, deodorant and shampoo. For women, this can also include sanitary products. They may be forced to choose between feeding themselves or staying clean.
As well as the obvious toiletries we all rely on, other essentials such as sun cream, razors, hair brushes, combs and nappies are also needed. Make-up can also play its part in boosting self-esteem and confidence for many people.
Toiletries Amnesty is a web directory that brings together charities and community groups in need of toiletries, and the general public with their supplies of unwanted or unused toiletries to donate. You can search the directory for the nearest causes that accept toiletries, and see their individual listings for the products they need the most and how you should donate them. Charities and organisations can register for the directory and change their listing as often as is needed.
During the coronavirus pandemic, more and more people found themselves in hygiene poverty and needed a helping hand from the UK’s charities and voluntary organisations, but there have been many funding cuts to the charity sector over the years, and they have also been hit hard by coronavirus. When you donate to our GoFundMe, you help us reach more people and organisations around the UK.
We are a small team of volunteers at Toiletries Amnesty; we are self-funded and don't receive any external funding or government support, which is why we need your help to keep our work going.
· We need to pay for courier costs so we can get products from consumer brands and partners to those who need them right now.
· We need money to develop our website and database and make it better for the organisations we support, enabling us to communicate with them more easily.
· We need to maintain our presence on social media, keep answering emails and calls, and deal with the day-to-day admin of this busy but vital cause.
