I am Sean McFarlane Jr., and I’ve decided to use my platform to help those in need following the devastation caused by Hurricane Melissa on the western coast of Jamaica.

This GoFundMe was created to raise funds for essential supplies and necessities, as well as to cover the costs of packaging and shipping barrels directly to those affected by this tragedy. This campaign is personal to me — it’s about helping friends, fellow teammates, and communities that I’ve been fortunate enough to know, grow with, and be part of over the years.

As a professional athlete born and raised in Jamaica, this island has always been the heartbeat of who I am. I left just before my teenage years to study and play professionally in the United States, but no matter where life took me, Jamaica has always been home.

To now witness firsthand how this disaster has devastated our country has been deeply moving and heartbreaking. Seeing families fight for food and clean water, or having nowhere safe to sleep — it’s a pain that’s hard to put into words. Each day, many wake up with only one thought on their minds:

“How are we going to survive? How are we going to eat? What will the future look like for our children?”

The road to recovery for the victims of Hurricane Melissa will be long and difficult. But as a citizen, as someone who loves this island deeply, even as a human with empathy, I believe it’s our duty to do whatever we can — no matter how small — to help those who are suffering. Even the smallest act of kindness can make a massive difference for someone that has lost everything.

In light of the recent tragedy, my family and I have decided to help in any way we can.

We are seeking assistance to pack and ship three (or more) barrels filled with food, essential supplies, and nonperishables to families most affected by the hurricane.

For those unable to give monetary donations, we will also share an address where food items and supplies can be shipped or delivered to be packed and sent. Every contribution, no matter the size, counts — so many families have lost everything.

As a member of the Kingston community that was spared the worst of the storm, seeing friends and loved ones struggle without food, clean water, or shelter truly breaks my heart.

Let’s come together and do what we can — because a little from many can go a very long way. Together, we can bring hope, comfort, and relief to those who need it most.
