The friendly smile from a front porch on a summer's night. The way an old dog rests, well loved, on the sofa, pup form of mutual aid. A love story that's (most likely) older than you. It all happens in the Gayborhood on the NorthSide of Battle Creek where Toby and Lynn spend their days, inhabiting and making home. They are our friends. They are our FCC siblings. They are our LGBTQ+ elders who have seen it all and lived to tell the tale. They are animal lovers. They'd give the shirt off their backs to anyone. And they are OURS, drawing the circle wide (literally) and resourcing our communities with care and justice. To know Toby and Lynn is to love them. And when people we love are in struggle, the call is to show up. This has been a hard year for Toby in particular, who has suffered a stroke which caused debilitating physical consequences and way too many medical bills. They are in danger of losing their home if they can't get some things around the house taken care of. They need to contract the work out because they are not physically able to do it themselves. Roof, yard and door frame work are needed. If we can raise these funds, we are together doing the work of community care, disability justice, queer housing access, and intergenerational & cross class solidarity. We ALL will fall on hard times at some point. Hard times don't have to lead to unnecessary suffering. Let's tell the story, with our actions, that support and care are in the best social interest of everyone. Because they are 100%. Home isn't just a place; it's a practice.
