Raise funds for Lister Bluebell Ward and Post Pals
Donation protected
Hi everyone! On Sunday 16th June I will be taking part in the London to Brighton 2024 Bike Ride Challenge in aid of raising funds for the Bluebell Ward at the Lister Hospital and a small charity, Post Pals. I am doing this for an incredible young girl called Sadie.
Sadie spends a lot of time at Bluebell ward in Lister Hospital when she is poorly. They are currently trying to raise as much money as possible to revamp their outside area so that it is accessible for all of the children to use throughout their stay. I also want to split the money that is raised with an amazing small volunteer run charity called Post Pals. This is a charity thats ethos is to make poorly children and their siblings 'smile'. They do this through sending cards, letters, and little gifts. They organise days out, grant small wishes, provide emotional support, hold weekends away which are made to be inclusive to every single child’s needs. I would love to help Sadie give a little bit back to these incredible people.
Sadie’s life story….
Sadie came into the world dramatically on the 10th October 2015, from this day she found it very difficult to feed and would be in excruciating pain. By the time she was 8 weeks she had already undergone extensive exploratory abdominal surgery as it was believed that there was an obstruction in her bowel. This was proven not to be the case although she continued being unable to be fed and started to drop her blood sugars. At the age of 12 weeks she was admitted into hospital in London and was fed via a line into her heart for a period of around 8 weeks, they managed to wean her off of this and placed a tube into her bowel to try and feed her this way instead- she bounced in and out of hospital every 4-6 weeks with recurring problems and began to deteriorate but still no one could work out what was happening with her. At the age of 3 she became extremely poorly and was rushed into high dependency care in London where the amazing teams around her fought to get her stable again- it was at this point that Pseudo Obstruction was mentioned to us as a possibility.
In May 2020 (Covid times) Sadie was admitted into Great Ormond Street hospital for further testing to ‘rule’ out this condition as we were told it was so rare that it was unlikely that she would have it. Before even the testing could commence Sadie became very unwell and had to have lines put into her neck in order to stabilise her, the testing was completed (which was horrendous) and we were told that Sadie did indeed have Pseudo Obstructive Disease but as a result of this was now in full intestinal failure. Sadie needed to have biopsies of her stomach and an ileostomy (stoma) fitted to allow the air to leave her body (the reason she was in so much agony) she also had a tube fitted into her stomach in order to drain anything from there as it could not pass through her bowel. Anything she does eat orally is literally only for pleasure and must be removed from the tubes. Sadie had a central line fitted into her heart and now relies solely on TPN (Total parental nutrition) a 3litre bag of fluid that she is connected too every night for 15 hours to keep her alive. Due to having a line into her heart should she get a temperature she is admitted into hospital for a minimum of 48 hours for antibiotics.
There is currently no cure for Sadie’s condition, which we have been told will most likely deteriorate over time, there are potential options of transplant for us to explore in the future. Despite all of this and the battles that Sadie faces daily she is the most fun loving, sassy child with the most infectious personality- she has her moments of ‘why me’ but on the whole lives every day to the maximum and lets nothing get in her way.
Any donations would be terrific and life changing for the kids that attend the Bluebell Ward and the volunteers at Post Pals.
Thanks so much! ❤️
