The Timber Lake Volunteer Fire Department located in the Timber Lake, SD is a small department with 28 members. We serve not only the town of Timber Lake(population 517), but also the communities of White Horse, Ridgeview, Bullhead, and Little Eagle as well as fire suppression for about 1200 square miles around us on the Cheyenne River and Standing Rock Indian Reservations. We provide structural and wildland suppression, vehicle extrication, grain bin rescue, Search and Rescue, and Fire Prevention and Safety Education at the local schools. On average, we respond to about 45 calls per year. We operate on an annual budget of approximately $8000 from the city and county and rely on fundraisers and donations to purchase any new equipment.
Firefighter safety is our number one priority and to achieve that we must train constantly and stay up to date with our equipment. We are currently trying to raise money to purchase a Rescue Randy training dummy to assist the members with training. "Randy" would be used in place of a live person in many training activities, including vehicle extrication, grain bin rescues, rope rescue, and interior fire search and rescue. If we can do our job safe and effectively, that ensures the safety of the public also.
We are also trying to purchase new PPE (personal protective equipment), including some water and ice rescue equipment. Currently the closest water rescue team is 40 or 100 miles away in the towns of Mobridge or Lemmon. Although we've never had a call for this type of incident, we feel it's better to be proactive, then to be reactive. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank You!
