Project Africa 2024 - Thre3-6ix Radio

We're hitting the airwaves to raise funds for a contingent of Explorer Scouts travelling this summer to Malawi as part of the Berkshire Scouts Project Africa initiative.

A group of Explorer Scouts from 1st Purley and Pangbourne will be holding a 36-hour radio marathon over the weekend of 10-12 May 2024 to raise money for this life-changing international adventure.

Supported by Scout Radio, the show will begin late on Friday 10 May and run for 36 hours - without break! There will be plenty of guests, conversations, competitions, pre-recorded interviews and music to create a unique show that celebrates Scouting in our community and around the world.

One of the main beneficiaries of our fundraising activity will be Berkshire Scouts "Project Africa". Our Explorers will be joining a contingent to Malawi, where they will be supporting work in the local community that will directly and positively impact young people.

Each participant has been tasked with raising £4,000 to cover the costs of the trip. They have worked tirelessly on numerous fundraising activities for the past twelve months but still have a few final hurdles.

The 36-hour radio show is an ambitious and exciting opportunity for the Explorers to push towards their final targets, as well as to showcase Scouting in our community - and beyond!

We are hugely indebted to everyone for supporting this crazy fundraising idea and guarantee that every pound raised will go towards the Explorers' African adventure.

Additional information

Chris Hughes is one of the Group Lead Volunteers for 1st Purley & Pangbourne, based in Pang Valley District and part of Berkshire Scouts (UK). He is also one the one of the Explorer Scout Leaders, running a Unit whose members include all eventual beneficiaries of this fundraising initiative.

The funds raised will be split equally between the Explorer Scouts attending Project Africa in July/August. The funds are to cover the final payments that each of the participants has to make prior to their departure, and contribute to the cost of the trip as well as fees related to the community work that is being carried out.

The fundraising target represents the bulk of the remaining funds required - and should there be any additional funds through this campaign, they will be sent directly to the Project Africa supported charity, supporting community impact work in Malawi.

The fees will be withdrawn as one sum once the final payments are required, and will be transferred into a fundraising account under the management of 1st Purley and Pangbourne Scout Group, managed by the group Treasurer.
