We’re three friends — Rico, Michi, and Giugi — and we're on a mission to support a truly special grassroots project in Uganda: the Worth a Haven Foundation.

It all started not from a dream, but from a necessity.

Masika, a wonderful nurse and all-around superhero, had been volunteering along the border between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo — a fragile region often called the "cursed border" because of its long history of war and displacement. While working at Bwera Hospital, right on the front lines, she witnessed the brutal consequences of conflict: families torn apart, children orphaned, and far too many little ones crossing into Uganda alone, with no one and nowhere to turn.

Masika couldn’t look away.

So she opened her own home to the first children in need, offering whatever she and her family could. When space and resources ran out, she didn’t stop. She rented land, started growing food, raising animals, and slowly built a self-sustaining community. Locals and kind-hearted supporters from around the world began joining her mission.

That’s how Worth a Haven was born: a place where every child feels safe and grows with dignity and hope for a brighter future.

Word spread, and eventually Masika was able to rent a larger home and welcome even more children fleeing violence and poverty. Today, the HopeWorth Orphanage is a safe Haven for 25 amazing children.

But she didn’t stop there.

She knew that education was the key to lasting change and a better future — not just for the children she cared for, but for the whole community.

In Uganda, public school fees can cost up to €450 a year — an impossible amount for many families in Kasese. So Masika set out to build a school: a safe space where every child has the right to a proper, resourceful education, regardless of what they can afford to pay.

And in 2022, that dream came true.

The Worth a Haven Preschool & Primary School

Now home to over 350 children, the school is more than just a place of learning — it’s a space where kids feel safe, grow in confidence, and are encouraged to be curious, creative, and bold.

One of us, Rico, visited the school in 2023 — and the experience left a deep mark. So much so that this October, all three of us are heading to Kasese to support ongoing projects, see the impact up close, and lend a hand wherever it's needed most.

But to do that, we need your help.

Here’s where your support can make a huge difference:

What We're Raising Funds For

‍ EDUCATION

While 300+ kids attend the school, many can’t afford the basics — books, uniforms, or school fees. Some families can’t send their children at all.

With your help, we’ll:

• Cover fees for the most vulnerable children

• Supply classrooms with books, paper, and learning materials

• Support teacher training and essential maintenance

We’re also planning to build a protective fence around the school to keep the children safe during the day and at night.

Why? Because many children sleep at the school — the walk home is simply too dangerous. Some nearby areas become unsafe after dark, and staying on campus helps protect the children from child labor and exploitation.

HYGIENE

Right now, kids have to walk over 500 meters — even at night — to reach a toilet. It’s scary, unsafe, and has real health consequences. Many kids avoid the trip and use buckets instead, creating an unhygienic and stressful environment.

We’re raising funds to:

• Build new toilets right on school grounds

• Provide clean water access and basic hygiene kits

• Launch hygiene education programs

This year, Doctors Without Borders visited Worth a Haven and reported that many children’s hygiene levels were below national standards. Several kids were diagnosed with treatable infections — illnesses that could easily be prevented with clean facilities and basic education.

FOOD SECURITY

For many of these children, the only real meal they get is at school. While the foundation grows some of its own food, it’s not enough — and it lacks variety. Poor nutrition leads to recurring infections, digestion issues, and long-term health problems.

We want to:

• Support a local food partnership with nearby farmers

• Provide fresh, varied ingredients for a balanced diet

• Ensure every child is fed, every day

Our vision is to build a community food program: we’ll offer help to farmers in exchange for fresh produce, bringing more volunteers into the fields and more food to the kids’ plates. Win-win!

Ciaooo a tutti!

Siamo tre amici — Rico, Michi e Giugi — e abbiamo deciso di dare una mano a un progetto davvero speciale in Uganda: la Worth a Haven Foundation.

Tutto è nato non da un sogno, ma da una necessità.

Masika, un’infermiera straordinaria e una vera forza della natura, ha iniziato come volontaria al confine tra Uganda e Repubblica Democratica del Congo — una zona fragile, spesso chiamata “la frontiera maledetta” a causa di decenni di conflitti e sfollamenti. Lavorando all’ospedale di Bwera, Masika ha visto con i propri occhi le conseguenze della guerra: famiglie distrutte, bambini orfani, e tanti piccoli che attraversavano il confine da soli, senza nessuno e senza un posto sicuro dove andare.

Masika non è riuscita a voltarsi dall’altra parte.

Così ha aperto le porte di casa sua ai primi bambini in difficoltà, offrendo quel poco che poteva insieme alla sua famiglia. Quando lo spazio e le risorse sono finite, non si è fermata: ha preso in affitto un terreno, ha iniziato a coltivare, ad allevare animali, e ha costruito — un passo alla volta — una piccola comunità autosufficiente. Sempre più persone del posto e sostenitori da ogni parte del mondo si sono uniti alla sua missione.

È così che nasce Worth a Haven: un rifugio dove ogni bambino può sentirsi al sicuro, crescere con dignità e sperare in un futuro migliore.

Col tempo, la voce si è sparsa e Masika è riuscita ad affittare una casa più grande, accogliendo ancora più bambini in fuga dalla violenza e dalla povertà. Oggi, l’orfanotrofio HopeWorth è una casa sicura per 25 bambini meravigliosi.

Ma Masika non si è fermata lì.

Sapeva che l’educazione è la chiave per un cambiamento duraturo, non solo per i bambini accolti, ma per tutta la comunità. In Uganda, le scuole pubbliche possono costare fino a 450€ all’anno — una cifra impossibile per molte famiglie di Kasese.

Così Masika ha deciso di costruire una scuola. Un luogo sicuro, accessibile a tutti, dove ogni bambino potesse ricevere un’istruzione degna, indipendentemente dalle possibilità economiche.

E nel 2022, questo sogno è diventato realtà.

La Worth a Haven Preschool & Primary School

Oggi accoglie più di 350 bambini. Ma non è solo una scuola: è un luogo dove i bambini si sentono al sicuro, imparano con entusiasmo, crescono in fiducia e vengono incoraggiati a essere curiosi, creativi e coraggiosi.

Uno di noi — Rico — ha visitato la scuola nel 2023, e quell’esperienza ha lasciato un segno profondo. Così profondo che quest’ottobre partiremo tutti e tre per Kasese per dare una mano ai progetti in corso, vedere con i nostri occhi l’impatto che ha Worth a Haven, e contribuire dove c’è più bisogno.

Ma per farlo, abbiamo bisogno anche del vostro aiuto.

Come useremo i fondi raccolti

EDUCAZIONE

Molti dei 350+ bambini che frequentano la scuola non riescono a permettersi neanche l’essenziale — libri, uniformi, materiali. Alcuni non possono nemmeno frequentare.

Con il vostro supporto vogliamo:

coprire le spese scolastiche per i bambini più vulnerabili

fornire libri, quaderni e materiali didattici alle classi

sostenere la formazione degli insegnanti e la manutenzione della scuola

In più, vogliamo costruire una recinzione protettiva intorno alla scuola per garantire la sicurezza dei bambini, sia di giorno che di notte.

Perché? Perché molti bambini dormono a scuola: tornare a casa a piedi è troppo pericoloso. Alcune aree vicine diventano rischiose dopo il tramonto, e restare sul campus li protegge da lavoro minorile e sfruttamento.

IGIENE

Al momento, i bambini devono camminare più di 500 metri — anche di notte — per raggiungere un bagno. È pericoloso, poco sicuro e ha conseguenze reali sulla salute. Molti preferiscono non andare e usare dei secchi, creando un ambiente stressante e poco igienico.

Con i fondi raccolti vogliamo:

costruire bagni nuovi all’interno del campus

garantire accesso ad acqua pulita e kit igienici di base

avviare programmi di educazione all’igiene

Medici Senza Frontiere, durante una visita quest’anno, ha segnalato che molti bambini presentavano livelli d’igiene al di sotto degli standard nazionali. Alcuni sono stati diagnosticati con infezioni facilmente prevenibili — se solo ci fossero strutture adeguate e un minimo di educazione.

SICUREZZA ALIMENTARE

Per tanti di questi bambini, l’unico vero pasto della giornata è quello a scuola. Anche se la fondazione coltiva parte del cibo che consuma, non basta — e manca varietà. Una dieta povera porta a infezioni ricorrenti, problemi digestivi e conseguenze sulla salute a lungo termine.

Ecco cosa vogliamo fare:

avviare una collaborazione con agricoltori locali

garantire ingredienti freschi e variati per una dieta equilibrata

assicurarci che ogni bambino abbia un pasto completo, ogni giorno

Il nostro sogno è creare un programma alimentare comunitario: dare supporto ai contadini locali in cambio di prodotti freschi, coinvolgere volontari nei campi, e portare più cibo sano nei piatti dei bambini. Tutti vincono!
