They took my father, Please Help!!!

It  has now been, more than two months, that my father was taken.

My father has been taken. It has been one month and four days and we have no clue where he is. We need legal help but we can’t afford it. We’ve called more agencies than I can count and everyone pro bono just refers us to someone else. We have been in such a hard situation and are very troubled with what has been going on. We are asking for your help.

It all started 2 years ago when my father lost his wife of 40 years. Without his wife, my father who has dementia, couldn't take care of his finances. My father’s stepdaughter decided to move in to take care of my father. At the time we were grateful, but we had no clue what was coming. We were so surprised and perplexed when she wouldn’t share information about my father’s finances. After some digging, we found out that the stepdaughter had signed onto his finances and abused him financially. She had even added herself to the deed of his house so she could take it over. To protect my father, I then petitioned to become his guardian. However, we found out that his stepdaughter did as well. We went to court and after several postponements, they decided that because of my credit, it wouldn't be good for me to take care of my father. So my father was appointed a guardian by the courts.

We were thrilled. Finally, someone who would protect our father and his finances. Unfortunately, things only got worse from here. On December 22, 2023, we came back from an appointment and the guardian told us that we had 30 minutes to pack our things and leave the house. We were completely overwhelmed. Then we found out that our father had been taken from us.

We started to panic. I started calling the police to find out where my father was and if he was okay. The stepdaughter threatened us and said that if we keep trying to find out where he is then she would call the police on us.

Without knowing what else to do, we continued trying to work within existing systems. My sister met with the stepfamily and the guardian to develop a care plan for my father. They agreed on visitations that would include my sister. However, they have made it impossible for my sister to see him. Now the guardian is saying my sister can’t set this up through her and that my sister would need to work through our stepsister. Considering this entire process started just to keep my father safe from his stepdaughter we are confused, upset, and angry. How could this be the “best” way forward?

As of now, we have filed three complaints against the guardian and each has been denied. During this proces, my sister was denied access to a lawyer and we don’t know why. We have been trying to work through the legal system on our own to do what is best for him. The next step beyond pro bono lawyers is hiring someone.
