Lost Everything to Hurricane Helene: Help Mistique!

My sister, Mistique Piedra Jassu, was living her dream with her kids in the mountains of North Carolina. A few years ago, they left Florida and finally settled into the 1870 farmhouse they had always dreamed of. Life in Burnsville was peaceful, until Hurricane Helene tore it all apart.

In the early hours of Friday morning, an overflowed creek near their home quickly turned into a life-threatening disaster. Mistique woke to the sound of water pouring into their house. In a panic, she woke the kids, grabbing what little she could – some clothes, a few belongings – but the water was rising too fast. When they tried to escape, a fallen tree blocked their car, forcing them to climb to higher ground for safety. Within minutes, the floodwaters had engulfed the second floor of their house. Their home, their safe space, was completely underwater.

Stranded on higher ground, Mistique called for help, but rescue teams couldn’t reach them immediately due to the surrounding flooding and damaged roads. After hours of uncertainty, they eventually made it to safety, spending the night in a motel before reaching our mom’s house in North Carolina.

By the grace of God, they survived, and for that, we are beyond grateful. But the devastation is overwhelming. Their home is now filled with mud, water, and destruction. Their entire lives have been turned upside down, and now, they need our help.

Right now, they’re focused on the basics – food, clothes, and other necessities. While they are not asking to rebuild just yet, they do need support to get through the coming months.
