Our Jungle Project

Hello and Welcome,
We are three friends who were drawn together from all over the world to the high jungles of Peru.  Shauna, Jimi, and Tom.  We all share the vision, to create a community space that is focused on transformation and healing, what we refer to as Organic Regeneration.

Shauna, was born and raised in Ontario, Canada on a hobby farm where she grew up with abundant gardens, raising chickens, riding horses, and blessed with many pets. She spent 15 years in the hospitality industry, but after a car accident left her unable to continue, she turned to yoga, which changed her life. She was then inspired to do a yoga teacher training in Mexico, and after completing her Reiki level 1 and RYT200, she moved to Bali. She continued her reiki training and immersed herself in yoga and started her personal healing journey. In turn she was led to Peru, where her healing work continued, working closely with sacred plant medicines. Since then, she met her partner, Jimi, and has now started a beautiful little family with the recent birth of their daughter, Gemma. Shauna is passionate about getting back to her roots, the way it all began for her, and then some, and doing so in community here in Peru. And she wants to be able to share this with others.

Jimi is a musician and has spent most of his life playing, recording and touring the world with many different bands and projects mostly European as Paris had been his home base for quite some time. He decided in 2014 after almost 20 years in the ever more becoming commercial music industry to take some time out to woodshed and go to the jungle.
He has always been very passionate about music being a tool for healing and a doorway to divine spirit . . Which in turn led him to Peru to discover and deepen his practice developing and starting to work with sacred plant medicines.
He has gone through much evolution since stepping through that doorway almost completely leaving the commercial side of the music industry behind now to embark on fresh adventures with his partner and new born as well as friends down into the heart lands of the Amazon where music therapy as well as conservation/organic permaculture and family/community are to be his new focus.

We were blessed to meet Carole Garland, who now is a very good friend of ours, and Carole led us to Magdalena Ruiz, our friend and the owner of the Réserva Ecologico Chontachaka.
The reserve is well established as a conservation area that protects 230 hectares of pristine jungle, 200 of which is virgin rainforest. They welcome volunteers all year around who come and spend days, weeks, or months living on the reserve and taking part in the reforestation on the parts of the reserve that had previously been deforested for agricultural purposes (approx. 30 hectares of land).
Our main goal with The Sanctuary is to contribute to this growing community and to help in preserving and rejuvenating the flora and fauna of this region.

The ways we intend to do this and some projects that we have in mind are:
-The expansion of already existing organic gardens to have a more sustainable food source for the community.
- The expansion of medicinal plant gardens, to plant more of these sacred plant medicines that are now being recognized worldwide as Amazonian heritage. The reserve has already been contributing to local communities with their organic turmeric and coca.
-The construction of The Sanctuary house which would accommodate volunteers or guests visiting.
- The construction of a yoga shala that can be used to offer yoga and other creative practices to both volunteers/locals and other guests.
-There is also the possibility to help repair a huge maloka built by another community member. We will update the page in the future with a seperate video talking about this idea for the project.
-We also have future project ideas like working in conjunction with specialists and volunteers to help set up a butterfly house to assist in butterfly rejuvenation as the population has decreased due to poaching.

A BREAK DOWN OF THE BUDGET
The majority of the budget will be needed for the construction and furnishing of the sanctuary house and if we achieve our goal of $60 000 then it will be spent as follows.

-Approx. $15 000 will be needed for the materials to build. We will focus on using as many recycled and sustainable materials as possible. (for example the ACCA reserve has now sustainable bamboo growing for building instead of having to use hardwoods.)
-Approx. $15 000 will be allocated to the transport of materials and labour costs. As we are off grid on the reserve there is no electricity so no power tools. Everything has to be brought in and done by hand.
We have underestimated this amount as we are also counting on the help of volunteers. Please contact us if this is something you would be interested in.
-Approx. $10 000 to build a yoga shala, creative space,. Ceremonies and other healing work. Ideally this would be a simple structure although very well isolated against bugs and weather so that even meditations could be more peaceful.
-Approx. $10 000 will be needed for furnishings. Bedrooms, bathrooms, living space, and kitchen. We will keep it very simple but hopefully comfortable enough for people with the possibility of solar showers and other creature comforts.
-Approx. $5000 for a possible solar solution for light and electricity providing just enough for simple lighting and the charging of cameras etc.
-Approx $5000 goes to GOFUNDME for the transaction fees.
-We are also intending to contribute with other community members to upgrade the existing zip line and other work on the reserve that may require financial contribution.

We feel blesssed to have found the Ecological Reserve Chontachaka and are ready to participate with our project to build a sanctary and help protect and rehabilitate these sacred lands.

We welcome people who would like to contribute more than just financially, by coming down to the jungle and offering your able bodies and skills to help in the construction of the Sanctuary and the gardens that will begin in May 2017.  If this interests you, please contact us.

Having the opportunity to open a place off the grid for people to come and resource in the abundant energy of this beautiful rainforest feels so special to us.  We truly feel this is our mission, and we are so grateful if you can help us to fullfill it.

And please know our door is open and waiting for you so we can repay you for your generosity!!!

Many thank you's and many blessings..
Shauna, Jimi, and Tom
