Bobath Therapy for Henry

Henry is our 2 year old little boy born a month early in October 2019. He was born by emergency C-Section in a rush to save his life when the Doctor noticed he had two true knots in his cord which had become tight and stopped blood flow and oxygen to his brain. Henry wasn't breathing when he was born. We'd got to the hospital just in time to save his life and Henry was such a fighter to make it through this ordeal. 

After months of concern about Henry missing his milestones and appointments being cancelled due to Covid, at 14 months old Henry finally had an MRI to confirm that his traumatic start in life had caused damage to his brain. The MRI showed damage to the left frontal lobe and Periventricular Leukomalacia (both of these affect movement, speech, behaviour and cognitive function). Henry's brain injury has led to him having a diagnosis of Bilateral Spastic Cerebral Palsy, meaning that all 4 limbs and his core are impacted by his Cerebral Palsy but the right side of his body more so. His limbs have tightness and his core has very low tone making even sitting independently difficult and is currently something Henry is still working towards at 2 years old. There is no cure for Cerebral Palsy and it is non progressive but we work hard everyday at physiotherapy to help keep Henry's body moving and to try to achieve getting the brain to learn new ways of doing things.

Henry's future is unknown, we don't know if he will be able to walk, he will have to put in a lot of hard work to achieve this and would need need aids and equipment to help him. He will need Speech Therapy to help him develop his communication skills, whether this be through speech or finding his own form of communication we don't yet know.  What we do know, is that Henry is a happy and loving little boy. He has such determination to achieve every task he puts his mind too. He is strong and brave and an inspiration to everyone he meets. He works hard all day everyday to beat the odds and this is why we've set up this page to help him achieve his full potential.

Our starting point in our fundraising journey is to raise funds to help us pay towards Henrys next intensive block of Bobath therapy in Watford. We have been to the Bobath Centre a couple of times now for intensive sessions and Henry responded really well, the centre is fortunate enough to be able to offer us much more than the NHS could provide alone due to time and money restraints so it’s so important for Henry and ourselves to get this extra help. The Bobath centre help Henry with physio, communication needs and general advice about his condition and how we can make things better for him. Now that Henry is 2 years old we no longer qualify for the charity funded early intervention which means we need to find the funds ourselves with the help of kind people around us. The specialist treatment that the Bobath Centre provide can support Henry to reach his full potential. It will help him to be independent, stay healthy and allow him to participate in life. Previous trips to Bobath have been enlightening and really helpful to both Henry and ourselves. Costs for intensive therapy at Bobath range from £1800 - £3000 plus the costs of staying away but the expertise is invaluable.

Henry is just at the beginning of his journey so we would also like to use this page to keep funding therapy’s (we would like to try other therapy styles and centres too to see which works best for Henry), to be able to purchase equipment that is out of our price range and can’t be provided by the NHS and to give Henry the best chance possible at achieving his goals. We will of course love to do some fundraising activities over time too, sadly at the moment we don’t have time for this but watch this space and hopefully we can do something soon
