The history of the History Museum of Yelapa

Four years ago I (Lisa Law) created and hung a photographic exhibit at the Hotel Lagunita in Yelapa, Mexico with the help of Sergio Garcia.  About 600 people viewed the photos and were thrilled to see their friends and relatives depicted. Most of the images were from the seventies and eighties since I had been visiting the small village since 1961 when I docked there for a night on a sailing trip to Acapulco.

Working on this exhibit gave me the idea to create the History Museum of Yelapa.  I wasn’t the first person to think of this idea though.  Maestro Pedro, the head of the Secondary school had wanted to create a museum for years as well.  We decided to work together towards this goal and took the idea to the president of Cabo Corrientes, Precilliano Ramirez at the county seat, El Tuito. He loved the idea and said we would be able to see funding for it within the next two years.

So Maestro Pedro and I went to work interviewing the elders about their lives in Yelapa and the history of the pueblo.   These interviews will become an important part of the museum.

We decided the best place for the museum was at the center of town where the locals and tourists would be able to enjoy the photos and artifacts that we would present.  The building had already been constructed but it had not been finished.

The following year Maestro Pedro passed away from a brain hemorrhage and I was left to finish the project by myself.  Many people from the pueblo gave support but still no money was forthcoming to finish the building.

I commissioned Philippo LoGrande to paint the first photo I ever took of Yelapa in 1961, on a wall facing the bay, to create interest in the project. But still there was no money to plaster the building even though a sheriff’s office and a jail were created within part of the space.

We now have the go ahead to finish the building and hang the show but there still are no funds to do that.  So we are hoping to raise $10,000 to do a finish coat on the inside and out, to put in lighting and a floor, doors, windows and fixtures, and to create cases to house the artifacts that are being donated.

I have spent about $5,000 printing and laminating and framing the 100 photos for the exhibit  and they are being safely kept in Puerto Vallarta until the time they can be shipped over and hung.

The History Museum of Yelapa will be an ongoing community project that will be created and cared for by a committee of people from the pueblo.

Each person who donates over $100 will be noted on the wall of the gallery for their generosity.

These are some of the framed photos that I am donating to be permanently hung in this space.  There will be room for other exhibits to be displayed including the interviews of the village elders.
