My name is Liu "Gizz" Letuli, and The Voyage is not just a film project—it is the reflection of my life journey and the journey of many who have lived between the islands and America. I was born in Los Angeles but raised in American Samoa during my early years, where I learned the meaning of family, respect, discipline, and cultural responsibility. Growing up on the island, I experienced a way of life rooted in tradition, community, and identity. When I returned to the United States as a young boy, I had to adapt to an entirely different environment—balancing two cultures while trying to understand where I truly belonged. Living in communities like Compton and Carson exposed me to both opportunity and hardship, and through music, dance, and life experience, I found ways to stay connected to my roots.
For generations, the people of Samoa crossed the Pacific Ocean guided by faith, family, and sacrifice—leaving the islands to create better opportunities for their children. Many first journeyed to Hawaii, and from there continued to the United States, specifically California, helping shape communities through military service, sports, faith, music, and hard work. Yet the story of how Samoans came to America has never been fully told on screen. THE VOYAGE is a cinematic docuseries preserving this powerful journey of identity, resilience, and cultural pride.
We are currently raising funds to travel to American Samoa and Hawaii to complete essential interviews and filming needed to finish Episode 1 of this 6-part series. Your support will help fund travel for a professional film crew, final interviews with elders, historians, and community voices, cultural and historical footage connecting Samoa, Hawaii, and the United States, and post-production editing, sound, and completion of Episode 1. This is more than a film—it is a historical record and a tribute to those who paved the way. Your support helps preserve a story that connects generations.
