The STEAMM Initiative

Donation protected
My name is Laura Stulbaum and I am a chemistry professor living in Port Washington, New York.  Since I work at a university, I am fortunate to have a two month summer vacation every year.
As some of you may know, each summer I travel to Malaga, Spain to run STEAMM based programs for children. All proceeds from this program are donated to the DEBRA Organization of Spain; a national charity working on behalf of people with the genetic skin condition Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB).

This summer we will be expanding our program in Athens, Greece to form The STEAMM Initiative: For Refugees In Need. This program, spearheaded by our non-profit organization Full STEAMM Ahead, is an educational initiative designed to help educate Syrian refugee children and their families living in Greece. At this time, there are over 60,000 displaced refugees (many of them children)living in Greece.

The educational philosophy of STEAMM revolves around the merging of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math and Mindfullness to produce a more well-rounded educational experience. The STEAMM Initiative will provide a platform to encourage refugee children to recognize their own potential through  hands-on STEAMM workshops run in a warm and nurturing environment.

All money raised from Go Fund Me will be used to purchase  educational supplies in the United States (specifically science experiements as well as art supplies) and will be transported by me when I travel to Greece this summer. The additional money will be used to purchase ingredients, when I arrive  in Greece, to provide food for the refuggee families participating in the program.

The format of the classes will be as follows:
-Two hour STEAMM  classes once a week for 12-15 Syrian refugee children. Students will learn how  to produce magnetic slime, lava lamps, circuits, oceans in a bottle, learn about sublimation, extract their own DNA and much more.
-Parents will be invited to help prepare a Syrian meal (all ingredients will be provided) while their kids are participating in exciting experiments.
-At the end of each session, all families will sit down to share a meal and share cultural and life experiences.

I am extremely grateful to have humanitarian, Kayra Martinez as my mentor and guide this summer. For the past three years, Kayra has dedicated her life to providing art classes for refugee children & adults living in the camps and housing communities of Greece. This summer, Kayra has generously offered to help connect Syrian Refugee children with our program.
I have already been in touch with some of these families (via WhatsApp and Social Media) and we have begun to form some beautiful friendships.

Thank you in advance for supporting our campaign. I hope to bring joy and love to these displaced children and their families during this difficult time.

With much love,
Laura
