The Samir Project
Help build a home for the family of Samir Flores, murdered for defending his community’s territory
Please join us in supporting the collective project of Samir’s community to construct the Flores Velázquez family home, in Amilcingo, Morelos, Mexico. The family’s father, Samir Flores Soberanes, was a leader in his people’s struggle to protect their land, water and territory. His murder on Feb 20, 2019 left his family without a breadwinner, and without a home. We launch this Go Fund Me today August 2nd in honor of what would have been Samir’s 38th Birthday.
In a gesture of deep respect and affection, and to care for his family, the community organized to collectively build the house they had imagined together with Samir. More than just a family home, it had been envisioned as including community spaces as well, where meetings and workshops could continue to bring the community together, as Samir had done in life; a living memorial.
With this GoFundMe we want, in addition to providing financial support for this community project, to send the message that their community is not alone, that from thousands of miles away, transcending borders, the just cause for which they struggle is seen, understood, and supported by others who also resist the ravages of profit-driven capitalist “development.”
Sexta Grietas del Norte is joining the collective efforts of The Samir Project (Proyecto Samir) that have been going on for several years. With donations and collective solidarity work on the construction site, the community has already completed most of the project, but still have some final details to finish (fencing and doors), as well as debts to pay for materials purchased. They estimate that an additional $3,000.00 USD will enable them to finish the job.

Who are we? We’re the Sexta Grietas del Norte, a network of autonomous individuals and organizations based in North America. We accompany and support the struggle of the Zapatistas, as well as the National Indigenous Congress and its Indigenous Governing Council. One of their main efforts is against the large industrial megaprojects that are invading indigenous lands and displacing communities, such as the Proyecto Integral Morelos (PIM) which the community of Samir Flores is still resisting.
Your donations, along with our own, will be used to help Samir’s community complete this project, so that the Flores Velázquez family can move into their home.
