The Restorative Justice Collective

The Restorative Justice Collective needs your help to reimagine our contemporary carceral state.

The mission of the Restorative Justice Collective (RJC) is to facilitate restorative justice projects and advance initiatives and programming that promote an authentically reparative approach to criminal justice, with the end goal of abolishing and reimagining our contemporary carceral state.

In a society replete with passionate, reform-minded individuals--and in desperate need of grassroots efforts--RJC will, with a focus on mutual aid, advance restorative justice projects, initiatives, and programming by:

CONNECTING:

RJC will act as a liaison, connecting individuals to impactful restorative justice projects. By creating and implementing projects, supporting and connecting community members, and mobilizing social and reputational capital, RJC will use its platform and resources to create accessible opportunities for involvement in dismantling and reimagining the contemporary carceral state. To expand our reach, we plan to build chapters throughout the country in communities dedicated to progressive reform. The following projects seek to effectuate this pillar:

  • RJC Newsletter: A recurring newsletter in which subscribers are kept abreast of the latest developments in the criminal justice realm and provided with opportunities to donate time, money, or resources to advance criminal justice reform further.
  • RJC Collaboration Board: A live online bulletin board in which criminal justice-oriented organizations and individuals can post opportunities for involvement, projects, and events to garner support from volunteers eager to advance the respective organization's mission. The Collaboration Board will also act as a mutual aid mechanism, connecting like-minded organizations.
  • RJC Blog: A curated platform for thought-leaders to exchange best practices and opinions relating to criminal justice reform, abolition, and the reimagination of the carceral state.

FINANCING:

The Restorative Justice Fund (RJF) will be a repository of readily accessible financial resources disbursed to restorative justice-oriented groups to support events, programming, and relevant initiatives. The Restorative Justice Fund and its ancillary resources will be disbursed in a manner consistent with the values of The Restorative Justice Collective, but not in such a restrictive manner that organizations are unduly burdened and subsequently stifled in their efforts. The fund's ultimate goal is to act as an avenue through which those interested in financially supporting criminal justice reform but unsure where to donate can begin their philanthropic journey.

COLLABORATING:

The criminal justice system perpetuates harm and violence to some of the most vulnerable members of our communities, particularly Black individuals. Thus, RJC Project Ambassadors will identify projects, events, and organizations working fervently on criminal justice reform and prison abolition efforts to personally lend support consistent with an organization's core values.

RJC’s end goal is the abolition of the contemporary carceral state. As RJC strives toward that goal, it will continue to engage in impactful criminal justice reform projects that seek to drastically transform the experience of those impacted by the justice system.

Though this work is undoubtedly daunting, it is not impossible. In fact, the RJC played an integral part in the Martinsville 7 Pardons granted by Governor Northam in August 2021. Furthermore, we are currently working on multiple prison oversight reform proposals for Virginia State Senators. Supporters like you can aid in our growth and strategy.

Your donation today will help transform and support RJC in two ways: (1) the formalization of our organization; and (2) the creation of the Restorative Justice Fund.

  • Formalization: The RJC plans to formally register as a 501(c)(4), submit our bylaws and founding documents, and operationalize our organization's core facets. Your donation helps us to begin that work. RJC plans to use approximately $2,000 to complete these formative steps.
  • RJF Creation: Your donation also allows us to begin the Restorative Justice Fund. This work is not about the RJC, but the organizations already planted in so many communities across the nation that need the capital to advance their respective missions. Your donation to the RJF will be used to directly support organizations in a manner that makes your contribution meaningful, impactful, and readily appreciated. RJC plans to use approximately $3,000 to build the foundation of the fund.
We readily appreciate your assistance and cannot wait to get to work.
