We are a group of friends who have known each other for over a decade, some even longer. Throughout these years, we've all encountered people affected by addiction in various forms. For some of us, it’s been closer to home, but in one way or another, addiction has touched all of our lives.
As a team of eight 23- and 24-year-olds, we recognize that addiction can impact many people across different demographics. Statistics show that in Ireland, drug use is a significant issue, with 1 in 5 young people (ages 15-24) having used drugs. Over the past 20 years, the percentage of people aged 25-34 using drugs has increased from 9% to 26%.
Beyond substance addiction, gambling has become a growing concern, with sports betting being particularly prevalent among young people. The rates of harmful gambling have risen, with a significant number of individuals engaging in behaviors that pose a risk of harm.
On April 11th we are taking part in the challenge of running 4 miles every 4 hours for 48 hours to raise funds and awareness for The Red Door Project in Drogheda, an organization dedicated to supporting those affected by addiction. This challenge is not only for those directly suffering from addiction but also for the loved ones who watch their family and friends struggle without knowing how to help.
We’ve all witnessed the heartache that addiction causes, and we hope that the funds we raise will provide support to those who need it most. Any and all donations are greatly appreciated!
