The Re-Bricking of Historic Virginia Park Street

Tax deductible
DETROIT, MI - Truly, it has been a community-wide effort to preserve and restore the
beautiful historic brick street in the Virginia Park neighborhood. Unfortunately, bricks laid
in 1894 - 1910 have certainly received their fair share of damage. Over the years the
foundation has broken down and created many large, uneven and sunken areas that
are a safety concern for residents. Thanks to the advocacy of our neighborhood
volunteers, DTE and ITC have generously donated approximately 20,000 historic salt
glazed road bricks for the future re-bricking of our street! However, moving bricks is
costly. Many residents, community members, and DTE employees helped join the
cause by volunteering their time and assets, including their own property to store
palleted bricks during the first transfer of bricks. Volunteers have moved valuable whole
bricks one by one, stacked them on pallets, wrapped them, rented loader machines and
trailers, borrowed trucks, filled gas tanks, and bought pallets and plastic wrap. The first
round of collecting these salvaged bricks has been completed, but more bricks are to be
received. We are asking for financial help to further our ability to collect and preserve as
many of these historic bricks to take a step towards restoring our road! A local non-
profit, Midtown Detroit, Inc. a key partner and resource in our efforts to re-brick our road
has generously offered to donate your contribution to our cause, making your donation
tax deductible.
Want to join us in making a difference? The Virginia Park Brick Task Force is raising
money to move these bricks safely from their present location to a local secured
location until they can be used to repair the street. It seems it takes more than just a
village it also takes money. Thanks in advance for your contribution to this effort that
means so much to our community.
