Braden and Haley Meints , pregnant with their second son, went to a specialist for help after Haley unfortunately had a hemorrhage at 12 weeks. She continued losing amniotic fluid throughout that time period and the first specialist they consulted with advised them it would be ok to terminate the pregnancy. This was not something they could choose. They believed God would decide and they would do whatever they could possibly do to keep both Haley and the baby safe. At 25 weeks Haley lost more amniotic fluid. At 27 weeks doctors at St Lukes Children’s Hospital in Sioux City thought it was best to admit her from then on until delivery. She spent the rest of the pregnancy on bed rest in the hospital using her PTO , with hopes for long term or short term disability to be possible. Unfortunately that has never been approved. They hoped to get baby Meints to January 3rd for delivery when she’d be 34 weeks. She only made it to 31 weeks when she went in to active labor and her placenta started detaching. It was a very scary day. They said life expectancy for the baby was very low and they were also very worried they could lose Haley as well. Against All Odds Frederick Matthew Meints was born and came out crying!!! For the majority of his hospital stay he was at the NICU at St Lukes in Sioux City. They were able to take care of Freddie until January 30th when he was lifelighted to Children’s Hospital in Omaha with fear he may have a brain abscess. The team there believes it was a hemorrhage instead and will heal on its own. He will have some extra appointments and a surgery in a couple of months to repair a hernia. Most mothers get their maternity leave after having their children and unfortunately with their circumstances it did not happen that way and Haley had to use her ‘leave’ while being on bedrest. What we are hoping for is some financial help for these kids so Haley can stay at home with Freddie and not have to go back to work right away. Please consider helping this family so Freddie can continue to be nurtured and thrive getting to spend precious time with his Mama.
