INTRODUCTION

Vivant dans le bidonville de Kibera, au Kenya, le Projet Kaza Mwendo travaille en coopération avec 22 familles pour établir un nouveau projet de logement auto-suffisant et auto-construit à faible coût situé dans Machakos County. Ce terrain localisé à 50km de Nairobi a été acheté par la Coopérative Kaza Mwendo dans le but de créer, un jour, une communauté dans laquelle sécurité et infrastructure ne sont pas des rêves, mais des réalités. Construit avec des matériaux locaux par les familles elles-mêmes, ce projet à faible coût peut être le début d'une nouvelle méthode de conception, une source d'inspiration à d'autres habitant Kibera.

LE BUT

Un prototype d'unité résidentielle. Le projet Kaza Mwendo rassemble des étudiants de l'Université de Montréal (UdeM), de la Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) en plus de plusieurs professionnels et membres de la communauté qui souhaitent collaborer à la conception architecturale et sociale du projet. Dans le cadre d'un atelier participatif, les étudiants en architecture apportent outils et idées à la communauté et ont, en retour, une expérience unique dans leur parcours universitaire.

En parlant chiffres, le prototype est estimé à 30'000$CAD. Ce prix permet de couvrir matériaux, les infrastructures et services publics en plus des équipements. Cette seconde levée de fond essaie d'atteindre son premier but de 5'000$CAD et un deuxième, à plus grande échelle, de 15'000$CAD dans le but de commencer la recherche de commanditaires qui aideraient le début de la construction du projet.

LES ORIGINES DU PROJET

Coop Kaza est né au sein de l'École d'architecture de l'Université de Montréal en 2022. Basé sur l'Atelier donné par Georgia Cardosi ayant pour thème la conception architecturale participative à bas-coût offert aux étudiants de troisième année du baccalauréat, la coopérative a été créée dans le but d'aider la réalisation concrète du projet en aidant directement la communauté, que ce soit par la levée de fonds pour la construction ou la production de documents d'exécution. Depuis ce jour, de nouveaux étudiants se joignent à la coopérative et aident, petit à petit, à transformer le rêve d'une communauté en réalité.

LE FACTEUR TEMPS

Après déjà 4 ans d'ateliers et de propositions, la communauté de Kaza Mwendo tente de trouver leur prochaine maison dès que possible. Participer à cette levée de fonds est plus qu'un don, c'est une façon d'offrir un logement sécuritaire à de multiples familles.

INTRODUCTION

Currently living in Kibera, located in Kenya, the Kaza Mwendo project collaborates with 22 families who want to move out of their current situation to establish a new, self-sufficient and self-built housing project on a plot located in Machakos County, in Kenya. This land located 50 km away from Nairobi was purchased by the Kaza Mwendo Cooperative to create, one day, a community in which safety and infrastructure are not a dream, but a reality. Built with local resources by the families themselves, this low-cost project can be the beginning of a new way of conceiving and inspiring others living in Kibera.

THE GOAL

A housing unit prototype. The Kaza Mwendo project brings students from Université de Montréal (UdeM), Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) as well as many professionals and community members who want to help with the architectural and social construction of the project. In a participative workshop, architecture students bring tools and ideas to the community, while developing their cultural knowledge.

In numbers, the prototype is estimated to cost approximately 30'000$CAD. This price can cover the materials, the public infrastructure installation and other equipment. This second fundraiser tries to reach a first goal of 5'000$CAD and a second, on a larger scope, of 15'000$CAD to find sponsors as well as help start the construction process.

THE ORIGIN OF THE PROJECT

Coop Kaza was born in the School of Architecture of Université de Montréal in 2022. Based on Georgia Cardosi's participative low-cost workshop offered to third-year bachelor's degree students, the cooperative was created to help bring the project to life by helping the community by raising funds or making construction plans. Ever since new students have joined the cooperative to help the community make their dreams a reality.

THE TIME FACTOR

After 4 years of workshops, the Kaza Mwendo community desires to find their next home as soon as possible. Helping this fundraiser is more than giving money to charity, it's a way of giving a safe and secure home to families.
