The Immigrant Senior Support Fund

UPDATE: In the process of distributing these funds to graduating seniors we were unable to assist a few with their requests. As a result, we are reopening donations to meet their needs and provide financial support.

We are the Coalition for Immigrant Reform and Equality at Dartmouth College (CoFIRED)! Since 2014, CoFIRED has worked to support undocumented and immigrant peoples on Dartmouth campus and in the Upper Valley.

With a change in administration and a threat to people’s livelihood, CoFIRED is committed to providing resources for our undocumented and immigrant community at Dartmouth College and in the Upper Valley. The Immigrant Senior Support Fund is a campaign aimed to support Dartmouth’s low-income, first and second-generation immigrant seniors with families travelling domestically for graduation.

First-generation immigrants are individuals who have moved from their native country to live in another, while second-generation immigrants are citizens whose parents were born abroad. First-generation college students are individuals whose parents did not complete a college or university degree. Thus, for low income, first and second-generation immigrants who are also first generation college students, graduation is a meaningful occasion to share with their loved ones as it symbolizes not only the student’s hard work and achievements, but also their family’s sacrifices and struggles along the way. It is a celebratory event as families reflect on their journey and barriers they have overcome together.

With the money we raise, we will host a talk with an immigration lawyer at the end of the winter term. This event will be open especially to graduating seniors who may have doubts or questions about their immigrant family travelling for their college graduation. We will also allocate money to give to students who may financially struggle to bring their family to campus.
