The ICE COLD reality of our countries immigration system: A family Torn Apart by Injustice
It never crossed our minds that we would lose our family friend. Our friend who made us snort with laughter at dinner, drive hours for a simple favor, and brought light to our lives. But today, we are reaching out on his and his families behalf, whose lives have been torn apart by a cruel and injust immigration system.
Diego, a kind, hardworking, and deeply devoted husband and father, was taken without warning or the right to appear in front of a judge to present his documents as an immigrant in the path to citizenship. Despite being in the process of applying for citizenship through a legal marriage with his wife Nicole, a U.S. citizen, , he was abruptly taken by ICE while driving home from one of his many jobs with his wife and newborn in the car.
Over the course of three agonizing weeks, Diego was transported across seven states, detained in inhumane conditions, and subjected to verbal abuse and mockery—all while our government spent thousands of taxpayer dollars to forcibly remove a man who posed no threat. He was shackled and deported to Peru after 23 days in ICE custody, including a 9-hour flight in handcuffs.
This is not just Diego’s story. This is the story of countless immigrants who are contributing to our communities with dignity and love—only to be treated with contempt and stripped of their rights.
Diego spent 60+ hours a week working to support his family, cleaning local grocery stores and offices, always with a smile and a heart full of generosity. He loves hiking, animals, and most of all, being with Nicole and their baby. Now, they face the devasting possibility of spending years apart—unless we come together to help.
The good news: Diego has every legal right to return and reunite with his family. But the process is long, expensive, and emotionally exhausting. Your support can help cover the legal fees, travel costs, and basic living expenses for this young family as they fight for justice and reunion.
Finding an immigrant lawyer has never been so hard. Immigration lawyers are working nonstop and extending themselves with probono hours. Our lawyer tried to get Diego in front of the lawyers but it was not possible. We tried delayed deportation and it was not granted. Our expenses with lawyers are high. Nicole is moving to her mom's house this week. Diego is doing well in Peru looking for a job.
Help us bring Nicole, Diego, and Denver back together.
