Hello again!
As we have all felt the profound impacts of the continued presence and spread of the novel coronavirus, it will come as no surprise that we are reaching out again on behalf of some of our community members who are incarcerated. For many, the lack of access to essentials like coffee, salt and pepper have been a continued struggle as normal systems of distribution are cut off.
Going into our third year now, the Grassroots Grower's Alliance and Growing Justice have forged relationships within one such facility and the surrounding neighborhood, generating channels of fresh food access between. Our goal has been to share resources and learning opportunities across three small-scale urban farms - one located onsite at the prison - for the sake of a vital local food network and a deepened sense of resilience when we work alongside one another.
With this deeper connection has come a responsibility to respond to our community's needs - especially in these times of socioeconomic upheaval and isolation. Though our program focuses on a subset of the community, we are committed to supporting everyone at the facility as we can. As we have stayed connected through this pandemic, and with your earlier support, we were able to supply coffee, creamer, sugar and even some staples like rice meals and granola bars to everyone. See the previous campaign for pictures of the carloads of goods that we brought in thanks to your support!
Due to a number of circumstances, folks are again without coffee, and so here we are again. Though it might seem small, a cup of coffee and the ability to flavor food with s&p is essential - always - and especially during these uncertain and isolating times. Even more so, support from the broader Atlanta community is a resounding reminder that they are not alone, that we can - and must - take care of each other.
Contribute to this web of support by donating $6 today, the cost of one jar of instant coffee. Any donation, no matter the amount, will be an incredible “pick-me-up” for our community inside. All contributions will go directly to purchasing the items listed below. Thank you for your support, big or small!
Cost Breakdown:
[One jar of instant coffee costs around $6 - this will supply 1-2 residents with coffee for about 1-2 months]
To serve everyone at the facility (250 people) is ~180 jars = $1,000
To provide an adequate supply of creamer, sugar and Sweet'N Low = $300
To secure salt & pepper snack baggies = $200
Total = $1,500
Any extra funds will go towards securing more of the above, as it is possible we'll be at it again in a month or two. Stay tuned.
As always, thank you for your commitment to our friends, family, and community members. This will be a great gift indeed!
