Hi, I’m Alexie Garcia, and I’m the founder of The Gentle Start Project- a nonprofit initiative that sends care packages to children and teens who are just starting residential or inpatient eating disorder treatment.

When I began treatment for my eating disorder at twelve years old, it was one of the scariest and loneliest times of my life. I felt completely helpless. But the care packages my parents sent- small things like a fuzzy pair of socks, a handwritten note, and especially a good book- made a tremendous difference. They reminded me that I was still me, that people believed in me, and that- even though it didn’t feel like it at the time- things would get better.

Unfortunately, not everyone gets that. Many kids arrive at treatment centers without anything comforting or familiar. And many families feel helpless, unsure how to support their child in such a vulnerable moment. I want to change that.

The Gentle Start Project’s mission is to support children and teens entering eating disorder treatment by delivering care packages filled with comfort, encouragement, and a reminder that they are not alone.

Each box includes cozy, calming things- like stuffed animals, affirmation cards, fuzzy socks, or art supplies- meant to ease that scary transition into treatment and offer a little strength and hope.

I’m currently funding the first few boxes myself, but I need your help to reach more kids.
