The Garden Project has been at the heart of our community for over 20 years—but it didn’t always look the way it does today. What is now a vibrant, welcoming green space was once a neglected piece of wasteland, plagued by fly-tipping, overgrowth, and serious rodent problems. It was an eyesore and a concern for local residents, impacting both the environment and the well-being of those living nearby.

Determined to make a change, members of the community came together and took it upon themselves to transform the land. With very limited support and only small amounts of funding received over the years, residents cleared the waste, tackled the infestation, and slowly rebuilt the space from the ground up. Everything you see today has been created through sheer dedication. Maintained entirely without pay, with materials, time, and skills generously donated by local people.

Today, the garden is not only a place to gather, but also a space to grow. We cultivate our own plants and vegetables and encourage local children to get involved in gardening activities that support their development and understanding of green spaces and where food comes from. It provides a safe outdoor environment for children to play, a peaceful retreat for older residents, and a welcoming setting for everyone.

Over the years, it has grown into a much-loved community hub where friendships have formed, families and neighbors gather for annual BBQs, and inclusive events like disability-friendly parties and bonfire nights are held to bring people together—ensuring no one feels left out.

Recently, however, the council has unexpectedly “unadopted” the land without any notice or consultation, leaving residents responsible for significant structural work and ongoing maintenance costs. This includes essential repairs and safety measures that are far beyond what our small, volunteer-run community can afford. The lack of communication and support has placed an unfair and overwhelming financial burden on the very people who worked so hard to build and maintain this space.

Without help, we risk losing a garden that has supported community spirit, inclusion, and well-being for more than two decades. We are now reaching out for support to help cover these unexpected costs, protect the future of The Garden Project, and ensure it remains a safe, inclusive, and vibrant space for generations to come. Every contribution, no matter how small, will make a meaningful difference in helping us preserve this invaluable part of our community.
