There is a school in the small village of Ganagala, Sri Lanka that needs your help.
While living in this village I was approached by the principal of the school. He asked me if I could help with the situation of their bathrooms.
I figured I would go see what I could do, thinking that I might be able to donate a few days of work and some of my extra travel money.
When I visited the school it became apparent that I would need to ask for help from my wider community to really solve this problem.
There are 1,000 students attending this school and without properly working facilities it has become an unsanitary learning environment. There is no running water or taps in the boys washroom and the plumbing has been broken for some time.
The girls bathroom is slightly better but has no sanitary napkin dispensers and no way to properly dispose of them. There are no doors to the stalls or the front door which has resulted in dogs sleeping in there at night.
After having tea with some of the teachers they admitted to me that there is no staff bathroom and that they use the same ones as the kids.
There is also no janitor and as I have already hired one to start the initial clean up, I am hoping these funds can also go toward creating a permanent position for one.
I am asking for your help to renovate the boys and girls bathrooms, to build new staff bathrooms and to hire a permanent janitor.
As you may know, there are no government funds for this type of thing in Sri Lanka at this time.
Thank you for your help,
