The Epicentre is a youth and family cooperative located on Pender Island, B.C.. Families have gathered here for many years to participate in a variety of indoor and outdoor activities to support the young people of Pender Island. Historically, The Epicentre has been used for family programs designed for young children and babies. Due to the needs of a growing community, The Epicentre is now a meeting place for ALL ages. It has become an inclusive and dynamic hub of learning, recreation and connection.
An energetic group of pre-teens and teens is now using The Epicentre for programs and events (eg., art and cooking classes, music & movie-making workshops, writing groups, book clubs, board games and movie nights, etc.).
THE BUILDING OF A DREAM...
We are now working hard to raise funds to build a multi-use playspace and extend The Epicentre's programs and recreation OUTSIDE in order to promote fun and active living. We have completed the first step: the removal of the very old and unsafe playstructure built in the 80's and early 90's.
The driving force behind revitalizing the playspace is recognizing that our island's resources must grow with our youth in order to give them exciting and fun places to connect, engage and be active.
The Epicentre's Family Playground will be built in various phases. Please note: while we are asking for donations through Go Fund Me, the parents and children are busy fundraising through other activities (bake sales, lemonade stands, running concessions at community events, etc.). Also, we will be reaching out to other revenue sources such as local businesses and government agencies. This Go Fund Me page (and the financial goal of $8,000) is geared towards raising funds to support the initial phases of this multi-phased playground project. The construction of Phase 1 (see below) has already commenced.
Many thoughtful Penderites have already volunteered their time and expertise to get this project underway...and for this, we are very grateful.
Phase 1:
Court of Dreams
- A large concrete multi-use area used for basketball (with adjustable hoop), hockey, skip rope, four-square, tricycles, roller blading, pickle ball, etc...). The site prep is already underway!
Phase 2:
Littles' Land
- An area where our youngest can explore, slide, step and climb over simple structures (alphabet stepping stones, low boulders and a driftwood log).
Phase 3:
Adventure Course
- A dynamic area with low ropes, balancing and bouldering structures and a climbing net.
Phase 4:
Base Camp
- A small cedar shed (to house equipment and first aid supplies) and additional infrastructure such as a small section of fencing to keep our playground enclosed.
Phase 5:
Chill Zone
- A wooden bench and covered sitting area.
IT TAKES A VILLAGE...
Pender Island is a growing community and offers many rural-living benefits; however, it is imperative that we continue to offer dynamic recreation spaces for our children and youth. Thanks to the supportive community of Pender Island, we have a fun and safe place for young people to gather, thrive and grow.
The support The Epicentre receives, either from financial donations or generous volunteers lending a hand, will be deeply appreciated.
