Beehive Fence for Elephant-Human Conflict Reduction in Tanzania
Did you know elephants are terrified of bees? We need your help lining up a fence of bees to deter the elephants from entering Mafuluto village in Tanzania! We want to complete a six-kilometer line of beehives along the boundaries of Mafuluto where elephants are trampling, eating and destroying crops and injuring and killing people. With £15,000, this project will establish 300 beehives and 300 “dummy” hives along a 6km line to reduce the damage and danger of the crop-raiding elephants coming out of neighbouring Ruaha Gamepark. It will work with 60 beekeepers training and equipping in sustainable beekeeping, integrate with conservation agriculture with bees pollinating the crops for increased yields and tree-planting (over 800 trees) ... and include income-generating projects in beeswax and honey! Save crops, Save Elephants, Protect People, Restore the Environment and Improve Livelihoods ... it's a win-win!
