Wayne and Rochelle Dunlap were pregnant with their first children, twins, when their doctors confessed that they suspected the babies had twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome, which has a very high mortality rate.
Fearing the worst, the doctors hospitalized Rochelle. As they monitored the babies, they repeatedly saw reverse cord flow in the smallest baby, and they feared that they’d have to deliver him at 26 weeks to save him.
As though this was not enough, around the same time that his wife was hospitalized, there was a layoff at Wayne’s company, and he was one of the unlucky ones that were let go. With mounting hospital bills and the stress of the unknown state of their children, this was a very trying time for Wayne and Rochelle as the doctors continued to watch and wait.
The babies were a roller coaster, and, although Rochelle was able to go back home for a short time, they ended up in the hospital at 32 weeks because she was showing signs of pre-eclampsia. Shortly after, they decided the babies had to be delivered because Rochelle’s life was in jeopardy. They induced her. Riley was born at 2:03AM on January 15th at 3lbs, 8oz and 16.75 inches long, and Finley was born 15 minutes later at 5 lbs, 17.25 inches.
The new babies were healthier than their parents could have hoped, but the journey was a long one. Finley, who had fared the best in the womb, was in the neonatal ICU for 40 days, but Riley had to stay an extra 10 days before he could finally go home with his parents.
Wayne was hired at a new job not long after. It doesn't pay as well as his last job, but he is very thankful to be able to provide for his family again. Rochelle has left her job to stay home with the kids.
Riley has continuing health problems and will need surgery soon to correct some anatomical problems.
Their medical bills will be rolling in soon, and the cost of taking care of under-developed babies is a struggle. We can help them through this difficult financial time and help them recover from the unfortunate circumstances that set them back during a crucial time of their family’s life. We are very thankful to each and every person that donates. Any amount will mean a lot to this loving and hard-working family.
