OUR JOURNEY WITH TREMENDOUS NEED FOR HELP!!!!
Over the past several months both Tom & Tara have been sharing their personal story with many friends and family regarding health needs that require surgery for Tom in July. As a result, many have been asking Tara how they could help the family in the days ahead, so please read the following and let the words speak to your heart.
Due to Tom’s 25-year career in ‘construction,’ he has acquired profound spinal health conditions that now require significant surgery, rehabilitation, and the time necessary to recover and return to his personally owned business. His current condition includes 3 herniated disks in his neck that impact his ability to use his arms. His L5/S1 is totally blown out with bone fragments spread throughout the empty space which causes nerve impingement that effects the lower half of his body, therefore, his gross motor skills and ability to bend, lift weight, stand, and walk are greatly impaired and induce tremendous pain as well. The pain Tom suffers is literally 24/7 and has progressively become worse, with therapy, injections, and massage attempted for the past three years. Everything has been tried with hopes of preventing the need for surgery, and an extended time period of not being able to work. If surgery is delayed any longer, physicians have clearly stated that the outcome could be paralysis of his legs, thus, the inability to return to work in the capacity he has loved for so many years. Surgery is scheduled for Monday, June 21, 2021. Tom will be unable to work for a total of 3-6 months, which includes the 8 weeks he'll have to be in bed after surgery.
As many know, Tara has lived with disabilities due to multiple accidents for many years, with each accident occurring through no fault of her own. As a result, debilitating nerve pain has limited her gross motor skills to include mobility, walking, lifting, twisting, bending. This has been on-going, with many years of pain if she is unable to receive consistent on-going physical therapy among additional therapies as recommended by her physicians. She has been unable to work outside the home because of the associated physical limitations. Tara is an outstanding wife and mother, and supports her family in ways that help, yet in terms of finances earned they are minimal due to her physical challenges. Yet without question, the emotional impact of not being able to be what she often refers to as a ‘normal mom,’ breaks her heart. Her heart and soul want to do everything every other mother desires to do with and for their children and family, but irreversible nerve damage often prevent Tara’s participation in so many activities like other families enjoy.
It is also important to note that both Tom and Tara suffered through Covid-19 in recent weeks. Having the virus unfortunately created additional financial challenges as both of them were extremely sick for several weeks, and income was lost as a result.
As you reflect and discern what you can contribute, please keep in mind that the family does not receive state assistance for living expenses due to income limits, which also includes Food Stamps and SSI or SSDI.
Tom and Tara realize that times are hard for many now due to Covid-19 and unemployment. So, any amount that you can give to help relieve the stress of meeting financial and daily living obligations would be so appreciated. And if you are unable, they understand, and they both sincerely value your prayers as they journey through the next several months with Tom’s surgery and recovery.
