est 2019. updated June 1st 2025.

hi

thank you for looking

now in our 7th year, another season beckons and its official. TOO FEW VOLUNTEERS/RESCUERS/COORDINATORS

its sad to say that right now there are now too many people asking for help/assistance, (or a free taxi service) than there are unpaid people to help and the sector as a whole is utterly decimated. Closures of sites are happening all over the UK and more will be lost. We are already seeing on sites such as facebook that people are constantly passing on the responsibility to unpaid people to pick up, house, feed and to some extent, rehab birds themselves. IT CAN NO LONGER BE DONE WITHOUT MORE INITIAL ACTION FROM THE PUBLIC.

From JUNE 1st 2025, everyone who posts online, on our facebook group, sends private messages to me personally, or to others will recieve this...

AUTOMATED

...Hi. First off, could you pls pick it up and keep it safe at home wrapped in something warm and kept behind a closed door if you have pets, (pets don't operate door handles) and look at the jpeg to see if it applies.

Pls send a picture of the house in full from top to bottom directly above where the chick was found. If the house is where you live we need to see online whether the chick is capable of walking back up the roof to the nest which might not be possible if the roof is too pitched/steep, more than two floors up, with no windows in the roof, or if the nest is higher up in a chimney breast. Finding a local builder with a ladder might also be a (possible) option if the chick can be reunited side by side with the parent.

Unpaid volunteers are almost non existent this year and too many have dropped out over recent years, so as much info upfront and online is crucial. Please also be prepare to transport/visit your local wildlife friendly vet if requested.

If found randomly in the street, keep safe or take with you if in a car. Pls also list your full location/town, send a pm or go here... https://www.facebook.com/share/g/195KpwUAkP/ NO ONE IS AVAILABLE AT THE DROP OF A HAT, and unpaid volunteers have to prioritise day work, like everyone else

Apologies for the generic reply but everything is limited this year. This is a good starting point until we know more from you. We had many offers of help, but I am the only person meant to attend physical rescues which has now become too much. So to get help, please work with us before we can attend. In relation to gull chicks, you probably won't get help anywhere else.

If a volunteer/wildlife site (whoever/wherever they are) is able to help you, where or if possible, keep in mind their rescue/rehab time/petrol costs and make a donation to them

Thank u.

Whatever is raised from here on in will go towards the ongoing care and support of these much maligned birds, wherever they are located or end up. Its a desperate situation for all of the lone rehabbers who are trying to cope amid so much that is stacked against them right now. Not just in sussex but across the whole of the UK.

Wildlife rescue is hard enough with no volunteers helping. Gull rescues, finding places to take them to and their upkeep are a hundred times harder and only one site in this corner of east sussex has an Interest in housing gull chicks. others are being deprioritised/turned away from other groups/centres. there is also no coalition/cross over with other groups.

For anyone who is uncomfortable about donating to to a funding site where percentages are taken, please feel free to send a message and list your area. I will then put you in touch with alternative options or contacts. Not just in Sussex but across the uk...where there literally us NOTHING. Amazon wishlists are also available. see below.

PLEASE HELP... BEFORE THERE IS NO MORE HELP

We will do our best but with only one person conducting physical rescues, and too much apathy all round, its becoming impossible.

With all good wishes and THANK YOU.
