The Brookland Pathways Challenge

The Brookland Neighborhood Civic Association is challenging our members and neighbors to join us in raising $5000 by May 9, 2020, to support Brookland-based Pathways to Housing DC, a premier non-profit organization working to end homeless in DC. COVID-19 presents enormous new challenges to the work of Pathways, and they are looking to their neighbors in the Brookland community for support.

BNCA is ready to put $1000 toward our $5000 goal. We are looking to YOU - individuals and businesses in Brookland - to meet us in getting to the total goal. 100% of cash donations through this GoFundMe page will go to Pathways to Housing. Donations to Pathways are tax deductible.

Please read below for more information, shared directly from Monica Harrington, Director of Institutional Advancement at Pathways to Housing DC. Please note that Pathways is also open to receiving in-kind donations of high-need products for their clientele. Information on how to deliver these is provided below.

Thank you for joining with BNCA to provide for our most vulnerable neighbors during this health and economic crisis.

Sincerely,

The BNCA Board

PATHWAYS TO HOUSING DC AND COVID-19

Homelessness doesn’t disappear when there are outbreaks of diseases. Quite frankly, it requires our community to be more vigilant. Amid talks of the COVID-19 virus that has fatally affected the vulnerable are Pathways to Housing DC’s clients. Those they serve are often older and living with chronic health conditions and are top of mind as the virus takes over the headlines in the media. Our neighbors in DC (3,000+ individuals) are living day and night on the streets without access to clean water, much less soap to wash their hands for 20 seconds. Their food safety net is even more limited as restaurants where they once went for a cheap meal are closed and food pantries that rely on volunteers are overwhelmed.

We are asking our friends and neighbors to help us raise critical funds in urgent support of Pathways to Housing DC. No gift is too small (or big) and every gift has a lasting and life-changing impact. Our goal is to raise $5,000 during the next 4 weeks to help Pathways to Housing DC reach our most vulnerable neighbors in need during the COVID-19 crisis.

While times are tough, we can always give support in many ways, big and small. We know that acts of kindness will be remembered long after the discomforts of social distancing and isolation. These are the moments that define us. A monthly gift can help to provide the resources that are needed urgently today and as our community recovers in the weeks and months ahead.

In-kind donations like toilet paper, cleaning supplies, hand sanitizer, homemade face masks, and used cell phones and Chromebooks are needed. If you would like to coordinate an in-kind donation delivery, please contact Brianna Gipson at [email redacted]. Items can also be mailed directly to Pathways to Housing DC at 828 Evarts Street, NE Washington, DC 20018. Please include your contact information so that Pathways can thank you for your gift.

Here are just a few ways that your support will have an immediate impact.

$25.00 Purchases a Phone Card for a Pathways to Housing DC client. A phone is a lifeline. With limited minutes on phone plans, clients rely more than ever on phones to reach their case management teams.

$50.00 Brings Healthy Food to a Neighbor with Chronic Health Issues Like Diabetes, Cancer, and HIV/AIDS. Living on limited or no income, "stocking up" on groceries is not an option for many of our neighbors in need who rely on Pathways as a food safety net.

$100.00 Provides Hand Sanitizer, Food, and Face Masks for Pathways’ Homeless Street Outreach Teams to Distribute to Our Neighbors Experiencing Homelessness.

$250.00 Helps to Deliver Medication to Up to 615 Clients in Pathways' Housing First Programs and supports their medical street outreach efforts.

P.S. Follow Pathways to Housing DC on social media to see Video Diaries from their front line staff like Stephanie to learn more about their work to combat COVID-19 and to meet the dedicated members of their staff.

About Pathways to Housing DC: Home, Health & Hope

On any given night, approximately 3,862 individuals experience homelessness in the District of Columbia. Individuals experiencing chronic homelessness—defined as experiencing homelessness for at least one year—make up almost half (44%) of the entire homeless population.

Pathways to Housing DC is the preeminent leader in ending chronic homelessness in the nation’s capital. Founded in 2004, the mission of Pathways to Housing DC is to end chronic homelessness for persons living with serious mental illnesses and other complex health challenges using the Housing First model.

Pathways to Housing DC has the largest homeless street outreach program in the District of Columbia with expanded geographic coverage that now spans the entire downtown area.

Using the Housing First model, we have been able to maintain a housing retention rate of at least 92% with clients who have traditionally been viewed as “treatment resistant,” and “not ready for housing.” More than 600 clients are rebuilding their lives and recovering from homelessness as part of Pathways' Housing First program, including Veterans' Housing.

Housing is available in every ward in the District of Columbia through local and federal voucher programs and partnerships with more than 100 landlords.
