The Black Response Cambridge Campaign Funds

Donation protected
The Black Response calls for construction of community-based mechanisms grounded in the values of  transformative and restorative justices that address and prevent the root causes of harm, as well as investment in the social fabric of communities, such as mental health support, housing services, and quality education. Toward this end, we have mounted a campaign and have accomplished:

A petition that has gathered 900 signatures
Given a series of presentations on CAHOOTS and other alternative policing programs to various stakeholders across Cambridge
A series of discussions with Cambridge City Councillors to educate the councillors about what is possible regarding non-carceral public safety practices
A series of discussions with local organizations regarding the problem of police in Cambridge and alternatives to policing
An upcoming public forum on January 19 to inform the city about alternative community safety programs in Oakland and Sacramento

We also have some exciting news: We have a match donor for up to $35,000!! This means that with community support in matching this generous contribution, we will be able to provide a liveable salary for a full time organizer to take on this necessary work.  This position will be housed at one of our partner organizations and will work toward building a coalition of Black organizations in Cambridge. Whereas the police have the weight of a powerful union, we are working to mobilize communities to create life giving mechanisms of care and safety.

The attempted coup this past week further reflects the alignment of white supremacist agendas both outside and within our government, including within law enforcement. Now more than ever we are in need of community support in moving our vision forward. In order to manifest this vision, we would be grateful if you could contribute to our goal. With your help and support, we can enact change in Cambridge and  stop institutionalized racism against Black and Brown communities. If you are interested but unable to donate, please spread this information to other organizations and individuals you know who would be interested.

If you would like to know more about the Black Response, please feel free to contact us at [email redacted].

We are very grateful for your support.

Sincerely,

The Black Response Cambridge

***The Black Response, a coalition of Black members from Black-led, Cambridge-based organizations working to represent the voices of marginalized Black communities in Cambridge on issues concerning community safety. The Black Response was originally formed by an ad hoc group of Cambridge and former Cambridge residents in response to calls to defund and abolish the police nationally. We have lived and represent various parts of the city-- from the port projects, to renters and home owning parents, as well as Harvard campus residences.
