The Billerica Legal Fund to Restore Democracy is a grassroots effort driven by individual residents of Billerica, who believe that the Select Board’s decision to reject the citizens petition, seeking a townwide vote on the town center project, was an affront to the citizens of Billerica.

The petition had been signed by over 3000 residents, with the Town Clerk certifying 2,299 signatures before sending it to the Select Board to set an election date, as defined by the Town Charter. Instead, the Billerica Select Board chose to reject the petition, thus suppressing and disenfranchising the Billerica voters at large in making the final determination upon the town center project.

At this time, we are actively fundraising to pay an attorney. This GoFundMe was organized to help raise the necessary funds to retain legal counsel, payment of any legal costs and fees associated with filing suit to restore democracy and ensure our right to vote.

Our goal is to raise $10,000 to cover all expenses. All proceeds raised will be used for legal counsel’s retainer fees, for legal expenses, (court costs, legal filings, etc) and any other costs associated with defending and restoring our individual rights as the voters.

In our opinion, the actions taken by the majority of the Select Board regarding the referendum petition were not only reprehensible, but also in direct conflict with the Town Charter, the Select Board Policies and Procedures, and the General Laws of the State.
