The Bench: a simple concept to help the low income & homeless members of our community.
You can find volunteers set up daily at a bench in Downtown Guelph - rain or shine, seven days a week. Relying solely on donations, The Bench provides food, hygiene items and clothing to members of our community free of charge & no questions asked. No red tape. Above all, the 70+ daily visitors to The Bench can access these necessities with dignity and respect.
As of Sep 17, 2021 The Bench has been running for 54 months in the Downtown Core. However, now the The Bench faces uncertainty for the future. The City of Guelph announced that the Baker Street parking lot is set to close , which leaves The Bench with a question mark for the future as planned developments begin. This creates a logistical issue for delivering our services to the community.
The Bench needs to be preserved for so many of our vulnerable community members who rely on its services on a daily basis. We need to continue to be able to provide basic necessities such as food, water, personal hygiene items, socks, etc. As we head into winter months, it is even more essential that we raise funds to purchase needed items (pads, tampons, socks, masks, etc).
We can’t do it alone.
Over the years, dating back to our days at 40 Baker Street, we have had many strong community partners. Through her consignment store, Smitten Apparel owner Holly Mastrogiacomo has provided a steady stream of menstrual hygiene products via the #TamponTuesday campaign. This program has provided a valuable supply of these products, one of the most in-demand items. It ensures that a menstruating person does not need to choose between personal hygiene and food.
This is a true community effort - and we need to keep it going!
