The AWA Project

Donation protected
The AWA Project needs your support to complete our project with Ihuanco, Peru, to provide clean and drinkable water. Ihuanco has no access to water, allowing poverty to persist within the community. Ihuanco needs water for hygiene, agriculture, and of course, drinking.

What is The AWA Project?

"Awa" is a Spanish slang-term for water ("agua") within the South-American localities we work in.  The AWA Project's mission in Ihuanco is to provide water via fog-harvesting technology. These locally engineered “cloud catchers” generate water for domestic and agricultural use from ambient humidity.

At The AWA Project, we are committed to innovation that is sustainable over the long-term. We achieve this through meaningful relationships with our community stakeholders. This is not limited to consultation, but we aim to establish long-lasting, honest partnerships. At The AWA Project,  innovation is about building new relationships that break down barriers as much as it is about new technology.

Where Your Money Goes

100% of your donation goes to the community of Ihaunco. Your donation will be directly transferred to the NGO (AWA's) bank account, where it will be used to purchase technology and compensate our partnering engineers. All of AWA's volunteers are NOT paid, and do this work for the community. At any point, we encourage donors to connect with us to keep up to date with the use of crowd-sourcing funds. We are happy to provide (non-anonymous) donors with proof of our expenses.

Any donor above $500 CAD will receive special recognition on our website (with permission). We are not able to offer tax receipts at this time.

Please reach out if you have any more questions.

About the Technology

Our partner experts have designed a system of fog harvesters that utilize an arrangement of mesh nets to condensate suspended water molecules in the air. The nets are at least a metre squared in area and must be erected perpendicular to the direction of the wind. As the wind blows the fog through these nets, gravity pulls the water droplets down to a collector. On average, the output from these systems is quite significant, yielding 3L of water per metre squared over one day. This apparatus has been tried and tested in several remote areas and requires no supervision except when the water is to be collected.

We will implement as many fog-catchers as space will allow in the community (estimated 20-25). Each costs approximately $250 USD.
