The Appalachian Experience (APEX) 2025

Hi Everyone!!

My name is Katie, and I am a junior at Saint Joseph’s University. For the past two years, I have participated in a Spring Break service/immersion program known as The Appalachian Experience (APEX). For my third year, I will be participating once again, and this time around I am participating as a student leader. APEX is a program that is very near and dear to my heart, and it is by far one of the most amazing activities I have taken part in during my time at SJU. Here is a little bit more about the mission...

For over 30 years, SJU has fostered a commitment to service and immersion in central Appalachia. Every year since, undergraduate students and alumni of Saint Joseph's University participate in the Appalachian Experience, traveling to many different sites every spring break to foster a better understanding of the region, carrying on the tradition of genuine encounter, service and solidarity.

APEX is all about striving to experience the beauty and challenges of the Appalachian region. It focuses on learning how to serve with and for others (a Jesuit value!), as well as about the social and environmental concerns of the region.

I have had the privilege in the past to journey to Apple Ridge Farm, VA, during my freshman year, as well as to West Jefferson, NC, during my sophomore year. The needs of each community differ, but the service I have participated in has ranged from power washing to building a green house to cleaning out storage units. I am eager to see what comes this year when I journey to Alleghany Highlands, VA, as leader on my third APEX!! :)
