This is simply a temporary name to share the vision with community leaders, the medical community and potential donors.
$1,000 GOAL MET (3/11/19)- EXPLORATORY START UP FUNDING (Non-profit set-up fees, tax exempt application, marketing expenses, etc.)
Roanoke is a medical community with several outstanding medical centers and limited affordable lodging for adult patients and their families.
Caregivers often must camp out in hospital waiting rooms, hallways, and in their cars. Hospital personnel observe that many very sick patients are more concerned about their family’s living situation than about their own recovery.
Many families of inpatients from local hospitals require lodging each night. In addition, dozens of outpatients with serious conditions and their caregivers need accommodations. The Roanoke Hospitality House would help alleviate this huge need for affordable, comfortable lodging. Day guests could stop by the Hospitality House and use common areas for food, laundry, television, or computers anytime between the hours of 9am and 5pm.
Referrals to The Roanoke Hospitality House would be made by staff at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, Lewis-Gale Medical Center, Salem VA Hospital and the Blue Ridge Cancer Center.
The Roanoke (this could change to reflect the name of a major on-going donor) Hospitality House would be more than just a place to stay, providing adult patients and caregivers traveling to Roanoke, VA for healthcare a compassionate, comfortable alternative to a hospital waiting room or expensive lodging.
My father, who recently passed away, was treated for several years at Wake Forest Baptist’s Cancer Center in Winston-Salem, NC where he traveled from Marion, VA. While there receiving treatments, we had the opportunity and blessing to be introduced to the SECU Family House . It was a true blessing not only for him but for my mom and I as well. While the financial hardships of receiving out of town treatment is overwhelming for many patients and their families, a Family House offers so much more than that. My parents and I were able to know we had a safe, clean and friendly place to stay during treatments that often provided home-cooked meals brought in by a number of community organizations (including students of Wake Forest School of Medicine) as well as a place to store food items for self-preparation as often times “going out” following treatments is just not a good option. Most importantly though, was the emotional support of being surrounded by loving individuals and others going through “tough times.” My mom made many friends during their multiple stays that have sustained her and supported her during these last horrible months after losing my dad.
I have been seeking a philanthropist or financial support of some type here in Roanoke to assist with getting something like this started in our community. As our medical school advances and Roanoke Memorial Carilion continues to grow, the need for a resource like this is becoming ever more important. I am continuing to see a rise in the number of families traveling from several hours away to receive care at our increasingly recommended medical facilities. While we have an awesome Ronald McDonald House here in Roanoke there is a significant gap in the support available to adult patients and their families.
I have shared this dream with many people via Facebook in hopes of finding financial resources and while I have not yet been successful in finding funds, I have found a vast team of people willing to participate in the “grunt work” of making this happen.
If you would like to join in the effort to make this a reality in the Roanoke Valley, which would service the needs of many people across the state, please donate as you are able - no gift is too small or unappreciated. If we are unable to make this dream a reality, ALL donated funds not used in the start-up process will be preserved in a fund to assist area medical centers in providing assistance for out of town patients on a need basis.
