The ACSOM Charity Weekender

Donation protected
It was in St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church hall in the Calton, Glasgow, that Celtic Football Club was formally constituted by Brother Walfrid on 6 November 1887.

The main objective of founding Celtic was, "To supply the east end conferences of the St Vincent de Paul Society with funds for the maintenance of the dinner tables of our needy children in the missions of St Mary's, Sacred Heart and St Michael's."

The hall that became the birthplace of Celtic has since been demolished, but the church still stands and was the venue for the funerals of Celtic legends Tommy Burns and Bertie Auld; Celtic also celebrated their 125th year with an anniversary mass at St Mary's, which is now the venue of what has become an annual celebration; and earlier this year, Glasgow’s An Gorta Mór memorial statue was unveiled outside St Mary’s.

Canon Tom White is Parish Priest of St Mary's and St Alphonsus Parish in the Calton area of Glasgow. These churches still require a huge amount of support in upkeeping the day-to-day maintenance of the buildings. Meanwhile, St Mary's and St Alphonsus are still active in their communities, and provide support to those who need it most.

The ACSOM Charity Weekender aims to raise £10,000 for St Mary's and St Alphonsus to assist them in all their endeavours. This amount will greatly assist the selfless work that is already being undertaken within the communities that they serve.

Your relationship to the person(s) you're raising funds for.

My own relationship with St Mary's is that of a Celtic supporter, who has had a life-long interest in the history of our football club. As St Mary's was the birthplace of Celtic, I feel it is our duty to ensure that the parish always thrives. With this in mind, I have met personally with Canon Tom White, who fully supports this fundraiser. We have maintained contact over the last two weeks of our campaign and he is delighted with the response to our fundraising endeavours.

As soon as the GoFundMe charity drive ends, the funds will be directly transferred into my bank account before the entire fundraising amount (including other donations handed directly to our fundraising team, as well as funds raised during our charity auction) is thereafter transferred as one amount to Canon Tom White.

Canon Tom White aims to use these donations to cover running costs of the church, clear historical and crippling parish debts, and also to assist in the community work that the church is currently undertaking, including the day-to-day support of three vulnerable members of the community.

Thank you all for your ongoing support with our fundraiser,
